Ran outta gas two blocks away from a gas station on X-mas night.
Then I restarted the car and chugged all the way to the gas station.

you "SHOULD" have 2 gallons remaining when the light comes on. A safe guess would be 40 miles. BUT that is a guess
Almost, once. I was on the highway on a offramp and the light was bright, I got worried 'cause there was a lot of traffic. Luckily, the Max made it to the gas station.
I did hear though that its not good to let it go too low too often, because you start getting all the crap that's at the bottom of your gas tank.

(just kiddding) oh yeah i have never ran out of the gas. i always keep her full so she doesn't get sick...
Yes.
I took my car to the body shop, and the light came on while going there, and it was kindof a long trip, but I didnt want to get gas just to let my car sit for a week (because I get premium $.10 off on tuesdays, I wait to fill up then). Anyhow, I picked my car up 5 days or so later and the light was on, but I didn't remember how long it had been on. Started driving it towards a gas station, and it started chugging. Finally it stalled and I COASTED into the gas station under no power... lucky me.
Also, on road courses I've started chugging. When you are tossing your car around as violently as you do on a road course, you will start to run dry at about an indicated 1/8 tank. During normal street driving you could probably go another 70 miles from this point, but the gas is sloshing around enough when you are racing that it starts to miss the pickup. It sucks because you have to pull off the track and fill up with their $4.00/gallon gas at the track (or drive a long ways to civilization and get gas, and miss a ton of racing.

never
but last week
i thought i would
i usually dont fill up until the gauge is at the very lowest marker.. but last week i drove until it was under it.. light was on constantly and i was trying to get to the gas station but i couldn't change lanes in time, so i drove past it and had to turn around, took forever i thought that was it.. lol, but i made it on time

In the 5th gens you should easily have 3-4 gallons. I routinely do 100-120 KM on the light, and still have a gallon left!
I sucked fumes tooling down the highway, just plain old cut out, felt like a moron. The dealer just did a fuel level sensor replacement and I guess they took out some fuel, I was 50KM short of where I should have been. Filled it up with 68.3L, which is just about spot on for 18

I was coming home once and the gas ran out. I was half a mile from the gas station. luckily, while the car was chugging, I got to the shulder of the road. I put a sign "Dont tow my car. Went to get gas" on the windshield and walked to the gas station to get some gas and walked back. It was a hot hot day.
i have never ran out, but there were some times where i probably should have. the light was on one day before school, but i didnt have time to get gas, so i drove to school, which is about 7 miles away. so then i had to drive home with the light on, and get to a gas station. it was scary, but ive learned my lesson.
Heh.
It is remarkable that I've only run out of gas twice in my life, since I have a habit of testing the limit on every car I have owned.
The two times I ran out were a couple of weeks ago in my max - get this -on TWO CONSECUTIVE TANKS OF GAS!
The first, I was 1/2 block from the gas station. Got out and legged it.
On the next tank . . . I was low and going to work. Go uphill around the parking garage and then back into a space that makes the nose of the car point downhill. Immediate stall - out of gas again! I guess the gas pickup is at the rear of the tank so if going uphill you are better off than downhill.
I do have an excuse though, I installed my CAI and my gas mileage was horrible the first couple of tanks.

on the 3rd generations i think we have about 3 gallons left. once the light turns on if i fill up right away, it goes to about 15 gallons and our tanks are 18.5. i've ran out of gas once but luckily it stopped infront of a nice guy's house that gave me a gallon. but it'll never happen again
once in my gxe
I was on my way back from the body shop after getting my car painted and not having it all summer, and I was trying to make it to a good gas station (didnt want to put skeezy gas in it after it was sitting pretty much all summer) and I ran out of gas about 50 feet from where some kid backed into it(the reason it was in the shop) it was outside my freinds uncle's house so he gave me some gas, but now everytime he sees me he always makes some crakc about it, like "well at least he had gas in the car this time"
I don't like a pessimistic fuel light - if it lights up with 6 gal to spare then you'll soon start to ignore it.
I nearly ran out of gas last week because the light is so dim in my car I never see it. Ran out at the top of a hill and the engine died. Pushed the clutch in and rolled down the hill debating options with the wife. As we got near the bottom of the hill she said; "Gas station! LEFT!" and I managed to roll another 1/4 mile and came to a stop right at the pump - never even used brakes to stop, I had just the right momentum.
Then discovered I was at the most expensive gas station in the freakin' state. Damn near pushed my car off the lot in disgust!
I still have the receipt... I put 18.07 gallons in the 18 gallon tank! Dry as a bone!
