RIMS: Original vs. New -- Talk about it

There are obvious benefits to sizing up to a larger rim - but what about looks?
I have put my 91SE on the TireRack and similar pages and compared other rims, but for some reason, I can't help but think that there are few rims that look as good, or better, than the ones the Nissan engineers designed specifically for our car. I personally believe (4DSC aside), that the 3rd gen was about class first, and performance second. Having said that, I feel the original rims offer both class and a touch of sport.
I have seen some really nice replacements on your cars - no question. But I have also seen alot of cars that wish they were something thay simply are not. Kind of like a Lincoln Continental with 5 spokes. It just looks odd to me.

What are your thoughts?

And just to be perfectly clear, I'm on your side. I love my Max and I am constantly looking to improve it. No bashing intended.

I have always been a fan of low key, understated looks. Maxima is the ultimate in that category. Nice machined SE wheels on a clean Max look sweeeet. Especially a black one.

Simple 5-spokes look best on a Max, IMO.

I like mine alot.

i made myself a little tool to clean between the wedges on my stock so its not hard at all anymore. its like a little wooden dowell inside of almost like a spongelike material but stiffer. it removes all the dirt and brake dust in one insert of the wedges.

Agreed. That is my only beef with the original rims. I've watched many a car wash dude look at me with a "damn, I have to clean 20 sqaures now. Times 4! Is your homemade cleaner it shaped like a small square?

I like the factory wheels too but I think that the 5 spoke wheels look better. I also think the best looking wheels on the 3rd is the 5th gen 5 spokes. I love those wheels and think they are a perfect look for our cars.

My favorite 3rd Gen replacement rims:

Borbet Type E's
SSR Integrals (discontinued apparently )
Mille Miglia MM-11 2's
Mas Italy Presidents
Enkei RS5's

Now if I only had the $1+ k to drop on some of these

I like the stock Max rims (I have an 89 Black SE), but i think their too small...16"s are too little for our cars. I have 18" Giovanna 5-spoke and that does the trick. I'm not too crazy about the BLING-BLINGIN' chromies but its all good. I think any rim above 16" looks good. Just my two pennies....

I think that the 5th gen SE 16s and the 4th gen SE 16s look the best on our cars.

I'm kinda partial towards the 5th gen ones though, hehe

I actually do kinda like the stock look, and toyed with the idea of Z rims for a while. But then I decided the 5-spoke look is more modern. I lean towards simple designs like awsm66's (droooool ), almost ALL of Mizeree's choices, or other Gen Maxima 5-spokes.

5 spokes look good on a Max. Speaking of which.. My 5 spokes are STILL FOR SALE!!! Asking $450 includes all wheels, tires, lugs, balanced and mounted.

Man - your dearly departed Black Max was one of the "good ones" I was referring to when I started this thread. I didn't realize it had been in an accident. I'm biased particularly to your car, as it's a virtual twin of my Black 91SE. Right down to the Kenwood head units and Infinty 4x6's in the front. Nearly as strange. In February, my car was hit in a head on collision -- but SURVIVED!! (to the tune of about $3k in repairs - but it was worth saving to me. And of course, it was all paid for withinsurance $$'s.
Let me ask you: Didn't you find the 4x6's in the front were constanly competing with the rear speakers/sub? I'm getting a bit frustrated with them myself, and want to put 6 1/2 inch components in the front.

SkyMax: Tell me about the rims you have avail.

Thank you, Im sure you probably have the same relationship with your car as I did with mine. I dont know if the new one will ever be as nice. But we will see.

You know, I did have that issue with the speakers for a while. But what I did was, I amped the rear speakers and ran the fronts off the deck. What I want to do is get a pair of Infinity Perfect components up in front. I think they will improve the sound imaging greatly.

Back to the subjects on rims...I think that the one advantage of the stock 15"s compared to the new 16"s is the weight. The 5 spokes seem to be a little heavy.

Yeah. I am quite fond of my Max. I've had it since 95. It's paid for and well invested. I wasn't about to salvage it if I could save it.
Yup, I've been eyeing the 605cs as well. LOL. I'd prefer the Perfect 6.1's though.
And true about the wheel weight. In a sense, you have to add the pop charger just to match stock speed again. I guess this is why we have mods like pipes, chips and new rubbers on the rims. Wait a second...Pipes, chips, rubbers...THAT SOUNDS LIKE -- A **** Video!!

I swung by. They're good looking rims. Great price! Not exactly what I had in mind though. Thanks for taking the time to link me to them!

Personally, I am one who leans toward the aggressive side of the fence when it comes to aftermarket rims (e.g. OZ Racing Antares, Axis Hagen, 5Zigen Corpse). On a 3rd Gen, 5 Spokes tend to complement the lines of the car but the 6 spoke SE rims from an '02 add a little panache as well.

I lean toward the 6 and 7 spoke rims as well. But everyone has a vision for their Max. God bless every one of them!!
