The overdrive button on the shifter in my 1988 Maxima SE won't stay in... it's kinda hard to explain... but i can push the thing in and hold it and overdrive kicks in, but it won't stay in on it's own... I know i could take it to car place and pay, but i was wondering if any of you have experienced this and know an easy fix..

The J type O/D units in most LBCs had a switch on the gear shift ****. Alot of people, when these went bad, wired them into a toggle elsewhere in the vehicle. Is this an option for you? Pull the wires and hook them into a lighted rocker somewhere convienent for you? Don't flame me, here, I'm just trying to help .

 

Actually, I think that's a pretty good idea too. That way, you can change your gear shift lever to an aftermarket one if you wanted too.

A friend of mine did that on his MG B to put on a lighted **** that's clear and has a dragon inside. Also, for some reason, now O/D will engage in 2nd, 3rd and 4th rather than just 3rd and 4th the way the factory intended .

 

Why don't you go to a junkyard and find the assembly for your year car, take it out of the junked car, pay 10 or 15 bucks for it, or even forget you have it in your pockets, and replace it yourself.
