What! My car failed state inspection!

Well, went to get my car inspected today at a local Nissan dealer, and was told a number of things that was needed for repair in order to pass. I said "What!? Huh?" For as long as I owned a car and had a driver's license (over 15 years), I NEVER failed inspection! I am always on top of my car whenever it comes to maintenance (I do most of the work, myself). I thought going in today I would be "in-and out" in no time. Well, as soon as they took the car in, I knew something was wrong, because the "wait" just got longer and longer. I was then called to the service desk and was told that one of my front pads (non-Nissan) had a small crack, possibly from heat. To me, that was no big deal, except these pads were still fairly new. I thought this was just "too picky!". Well, the other thing that needed attention to, was that my passenger's side CV joint was torn. For this, I had paid a respectable mechanic a couple of months ago to replace both sides after discovering one side was torn. I could have done the work myself, but I was just too busy... so, I paid someone that I trusted. I even bought the parts, myself (all genuine Nissan CV joint boot kits). All he had to do was put them on! Well, it turns out that the parts I gave him, he didn't use! The boots I found on my car were'nt even Nissan! I was so mad, I went to confront the mechanic and told him my situation, and he said "And, what do you want me to do about it!" I wanted to slam him right there, but I held myself back, because I would have hurt him real bad. Now, the Max will be down for a couple of days waiting on new pads and boots. I have a 10 day "grace period" for re-inspection in avoiding another inspection charge.

Morale of story: Whoever works on your car, make sure you have that person's trust in doing the work correctly and honestly. And, if you can do the work yourself, you feel much better, becuase it's your car and you know you will take the time to do it right! I know I will!

Thanks! I just wanted to share this with you guys, because I know you can understand and feel my pain.

That's not right. What state are you in? Again, I was spoiled when I lived in NY because you could easily report that to DMV. I'm not sure if repair shops even have to be licensed in other states, I don't get that feeling. That's why warranty work s**** too. Sometimes they make the claim, do not replace the parts, and then just shelf the parts that were charged to your warranty. WTF does that mechanic mean when he asked what you want him to do about it? A lot of things in life one should just let go, but something like that is plain wrong. follow-up with some written complaints and good luck.

I live in PA...and what he meant by what was he supposed to do about it, he acted like it was my fault in some sort of way...not his service repair! He also claimed he used the parts I gave him, but Nissan told me that these were'nt Nissan CV joint boots! I had no proof of his service, except for the labor charge of the repair, since I took the parts to him for repair. It was like I wasn't warrantied for anything! So, I just left threatening him that this wasn't the last time he was going to see me. Thanks, all you guys for your replies. You feel my pain.

The BBB is a private organization that can do nothing more than post a warning on their website and in their yearly newsletter saying that a complaint had been filed.

They're a worthless organization with no real power. If you tell him you're going to report him to the BBB, he'll probably just laugh at you.

Call the police. File a report, then take him to small claims court and get your money back. Show the judge the receipt for the Nissan Boots, the receipt from the work the mechanic did, and pictures of the currento nes on the car.

That's really all you can do.

I don't understand why your mechanic used different parts than the one you gave him. He'd lose money to do that. He already had the boots right. So to get another set, he'd have to buy it. What's for him to gain with extra Nissan boots? Maybe your problem is with the Nissan mechanic.
