I'm posting this here too.. need help fast!

guys I really need help fast. I hope I'm not annoy you guys with questions, but I have a serious problem. I was driving home tonight and my clutch pedal went to the floor. Driving home without using a clutch was terrible. I had to shift without a clutch at high rpm's and then when I got off the interstate I had to drive home in 1st gear. What is happening?

maybe the shift linkage broke. does the clutch freely move up and down?

It stays on the floor, I can pick it up with my hand, but it doesn't function. I had to grind away going into first just to get home. It sounded horrible

Your slave cylinder is bad. On hydrualic clutches the slave cylinder holds the fluid for the clutch mech. Your seals most likely went bad and there is no pressure in the system.

The shift linkage would make the stick usless. It's his clutch pedal that's bad.

The part is not terribly expensive, about $80-120, but the labor will be in the $200 range. Might as well service that whole tranny right now. Great excuse to buy an ACT clutch from me!

how much you selling that ACT clutch from?
and if you don't mind me asking, since you seem to be knowledgeable in this area - I'm finding that when I step on the gas in most gears, the revs jump, and then drop, and then the car lunges forward. Almost like it's an auto, dropping a gear, or that it's having a lag. I'm driving a 5spd. obviously, and this is not normal.
Any thoughts?

It sounds like your clutch is slipping. A good test for this is when you are going up a hill, at have the revs at ~3000, step on the throttle pretty hard, but not all the way and not too fast. If you see your RPM's rise and you are not going faster your clutch is slipping. Can you engage your clutch at normal RPM's? Or do you have to rev it a bit?

Sounds like you need a new clutch job, and make sure that they resurface the flywheel, cuz it is most likely glazed from the slippage.

I don't think that ACT makes the organic for the Max. You can only get the modified street or the 4 puck or 6 puck. The latter two are racing disks, not good for street. $309 for the modified street disk kit. I'll throw in one free bottle of Redline MTL with each kit.

If I'm not mistaken the street disk = organic disk. I'll let you know if I'm in need of the ACT soon.

yes, most of the time is the slave due to it is under the car, but the master cylinder or the leak on the "hose" can be the problem as well

I just talked to a local transmission place and he said it was one of the cylinders most likely, and they replace both at the same time. He mentioned it would be $600 for the parts & labor. I'm trying to figure out how I can get my car back home to do the work myself now.

How many miles on the car?? Good luck. Find someone with AAA Plus and they can tow you for free. GEt a flatbed.

160,000 miles. Think its the original clutch? I'm afraid to find out. I'm thinking about just working on it here this weekend, I'll probably have to shop around and replace both the clyinders and the clutch.

damn, any average mechanic can do the job. mostly, take 2 hour max. my friend and I did the job on for my 240sx, however, i did went to the local nissan dealer and they quote me $100 labor for replacing the slave! even with both the master and slave, how can $600 be possible???? I do agree you need to replace both the master and slave cuz they are not expensive and save yourself all the trouble, most important of all is that, most of the time, you can't determine whether the slave or the master is bad even you take them out and look at them. again, if you take them out, why not just replace the two. I learn it the hard way.

with such a high price do you think they were trying to automatically include a new clutch in the whole mix?

If you go to your average tranny shop it should be about $500 for a new clutch. If you want them to replace the master and slave cylinder, they should do it for free labor. You should be able to get your clutch done, AND the slave cyliner for under $700. Make sure they are using OEM parts for the pilot and throwout bearing.

master = $~100, slave = $~100, labor = $100-200
total = $300-400, they are not gonna put a new clutch for sure. replacing the clutch is a much much harder job.

do the job yourself, only cost you around $200 for both master and slave (or you can just replace the slave to save more, because most likely it's the slave) and at most 4 hours. if the clutch is bad, you will not waste your time nor money of the new cylinders (consider they are part of the tune up). they just gonna charge more if you ask them to replace everything at once.
