December 13, 2000 - Japan's third-largest automaker, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., announced a recall on 12,712 of its four-passenger car models, made between August 1998 and March 1999, for possible defects in the vehicles' braking systems.
The automaker decided to issue a recall after it received two reports on problems, but no accidents, with the antilock braking system. According to complaints, the antilock braking system improperly engaged when drivers stepped on the brake, precluding cars from stopping in the normal fashion.
An unnamed spokesman for the company said the cost of the recall would be about 200 million yen or $1.81 million.
The recall also affects about 500 vehicles exported to the Middle East. News reports did not specify how many, if any, vehicles in the United States were involved. Details were not disclosed regarding the repair process.
