Raced a CL-S today, shocked him....READ!!!

So this guy in an ugly orangy-bronze brand new CL-S (2k2 auto, not 2k3 6 speed) pulls up at the light and looks over, it's on. I'm auto so I dropped it down to 1 and pinned it at green, as did he.
Immediately I got out to a 3/4 car lead cuz he spun his tires a little...my 18's prevent my tires from chirping at all.
From 0-80mph I had 1/2-3/4 of a car on him, no exageration!!!! He started pulling on me, and by 100 he had about 1.5 car lengths on me, which is when I let up.
So at the next light he says "What do you have done to that thing?" I said "Cold air and exhaust". He goes "Thats it?!?! Damn that's a fast Max, is that a 5 speed?" I said "Nope, auto". He said "My buddy has a grey 98 with rims and a kit and I smoke him all the time the whole way down the road." So I just said "I like your car, those are nice. Take it easy!"

It was great! He was absolutely dumbfounded. I was also surprised at how well my car performed, but I'm not complaining.
The CAI definitely hurts the top end though thats for sure.
Just another fun story to tell...hope you all enjoy it...
feel free to leave some thoughts

CAI doesnt hurt top end but it doesnt help as much as some other intakes do.

BTW nice job. Sounds like once he got up to speed he really started pulling out on you huh. Good kill to 80 though.

Yea he pulled, but not very fast. He gradually passed me, but it seemed like forever that he was behind me. I've become good at manually shifting my auto, so I'm sure that helped a little, plus the fact that I had less than a quarter tank of gas.
He was annoyed and I loved it!

Yea, that's called manual shifting on an auto.
I shift before red-line to keep it in the power band. Running it to redline and then shifting to 2nd with an auto causes it to go over the redline due to the small delay in the shift.
If you go to 2nd around 5500-5800, you'll have a nice strong shift and it will continue to pull through the shift, rather than going over redline and dropping all the way down cuz of the fuel cut off.

haha...nice run on the CL-S. Contrary to what some believe, those suckers really don't start to get going until 3rd gear

Actually, its stronger at Redline if you shift. Shift id say about 6800 RPM, Redline is 6500 and when you shift it into 2nd, You will notice the car sounded like it just got hit, cause it Jerks pretty hard, that means it was a tight shift. Do that and you will gain a bit more, at least thats what I do !

Our cars have redlines for a reason. I'd like to be able to drive my car for another 100,000 miles and would much rather spend money on mods than engine/tranny work. Trust me, just cuz the rpm's are that high does not mean more power. Look at any dyno to see what I mean.

LOL, the car jerks more because you spun the engine so far out of its powerband that it was choking and gasping for breathe. Then it finally gets shifted back down into the powerband and you start moving again. It's faster if you shift earlier.

You probably talking about the PDG pimp daddy gold(Sundance Gold factory name), those only came on 2k1 model as a limited production.. If he didn't messed up the launch he would have you all the way.. Anyways, nice ran!

But, dont they have a huge gap going into 4th gear that kills the big rush in 3rd gear?

Yea, just push it up to 2nd, don't do anything with the gas except keep it pinned.

Yea, that's the color.
I disagree with that, if he didn't spin a little when he launched, I wouldn't have jumped out to a lead, we would have been dead even. I still would have stayed right with him til he hit 3rd.

Thanks bro!! My sig pic works now!
I was also kinda hesitant to race the CL-S, thought he'd burn me...guess not...

Yes.

The big rush in 3rd gear ends as soon as they get to 4th. Very poorly spaced gear ratios. The gearing in the new Accord V6 (5AT) is much more evenly spaced such that it'll still pull strong going into 4th. I suspect when the TL/CL cars are updated they'll get better ratios as well.

I think thats the rev limiter u felt lol the choking.

not doubting you or anything but are you sure u didn't race a normal C/TL? my friend has a 98 maxima with ypipe &stock airbox, he raced his other friend's 02 TL (just broken in) & he took the TL off the line due to low end hp & torque or osmething, then by 70mph they stopped & they were right beside each other side by side. he said if htey continue the TL would have prolly won

It was a CL-S, I am 100% sure. Had the 17 inch 5 spoke rims, and the CL-S badge on the back. I beleive the CL-S was the only one available in that ugly orangy color too, as opposed to the regular CL. And the car was brand new, no way the guy put the CL-S rims and badge on it as his first mods.

The guy driving the CL-S most likely left his VSA (traction control) on and that's why you were able to jump on him off the line. As soon as the tires start peeling out, the computer cuts the gas off, and stops the car from skidding. It absolutely kills off the line take off for the TL-S/CL-S. If he turned it off, you would have heard him peeling out for a good 20 feet, and you wouldnt have been able to jump on him off the line. Also, there is no shame in getting beat by the CL-S/TL-S 3rd gear. I walked my friends 330ci 5-speed and my other friends 98 M3 auto (the M3 easier than the 330 though) that way (up untill then we were dead even).
Anyway, good run with your max.

If he would of been peeling out for 20 feet then I think my skateboard would probably take him off the line.

The VSA on, once it detect the tire slips it automatically retards it's engine causing less power delivery to prevent wheel spin right?

that's awesome man, some a$$ at my high school has a tl-s and thinks he's the $hit, if it was that close with the cl, I should challenge him to try my max, I have an auto with intake, exhaust, and y-pipe, he has a stock tl-s auto with that heavy factory body kit , do you think i'll win on a quarter mile track?

ok my question.
So if you are cruisng around 40 and someone wants to race you.
you drop it to first?
wouldn't my car be in 3rd gear?... and putting it in first means missing a gear...
won't that cause problems?

I'm not sure if it would cause problems. You'd probably be better off dropping it to 2nd and pinning it. It might shift down to first on its own from there.

Why not, if he had almost a car on a cl-s at 80, and the cl pulled on him by a car at 100 (basically the end of a max's quarter mile), and a tl-s has the same engine but weighs slightly more and is a sedan, then why wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that with a good launch it would be an extremely close race?
