Does anyone know of any inexpensive mods I can do to my engine to beef it up a bit. I have added a K&N filter, but nothing major.

Put lots of racing stickers on it, since they are so glossy they decrease air resistance and will make it easier to go faster on the highway!

But seriously, your best bet is a CAI, which can be anywhere from $100-200+ depending on brand and stuff. They really mainly just make the car sound better and have quicker throttle response, you probably won't notice much of a difference with it at a track or anything, but it's still a fun and worthwhile mod.

 

Advance the timing on it. I can't remember who it was, but someone on the org has a website on how to do it. Believe me, it made a huge improvement on my 92 SE.

speaking of timing, excuse me if this sounds stupid or something but isnt the stock timing position set the way it is for a reason? I dont want my engine screwin up in the long run.

 

Mark the original timing position. If it's pinging/knocking, move it back toward the original position. If not, you just get yourself a free upgrade! My Max runs much better with some timing advance, no pinging/knocking at all so far. Maybe the original timing was set too early...

 

they are set at a certain timing from the factory to use certain grades of gas
if you advance your timing, you should run only premium gas (the owner's manual recommends that for all VEs actually); the advanced timng takes advantage of the higher octane

 

This is usually the case, but if you take a look at the factory idle speed, which I believe is around 600 or 650. Most mechanics will tell you that with all the equipment on the maxima, that idle is too low. They recommend around 750-800. I have mine set at 700 and it runs better. I am thinking about pushing mine up to 800 to see if it will make a difference in my problem.

Whoa 93? What stations sell 93 as premium? In Cali I think premium is only 91 at most places...then it goes down to 89, then 87 for regular. And VEs really love the premium, I notice both mileage and performance decreases with regular (I tried it twice in a row to see if it started getting used to it, but it didn't, so now never ever ever again!)

 

does the muffler bearings take lithium grease or gear grease
