Hmmm .. winter tires on 18" rims?

Have any of you guys done this?

I've got Volk 18 x 8.5's ... not sure if I should do this ... but the alternative is to store the car for the winter and hitch rides with my sister.

Since I have the 4 piston AP brakes ... i can't throw on my 15" steel wheels anymore.

Your comments/rants/suggestions are all appreciated!

Tkx!

makes no sense putting winter tires on 18's .. still will be a b!tch to drive.. even though my cousin doesn't have any trouble with his winter tires on his 17's on his GS 400 and its RWD

Did you miss me or something?

You don't think I'll have traction with winter tires on 18's? The reason I'm even pondering this is b/c you see high end MB's, BMW's etc .. they have relatively low profile all season tires on 17's or 18's .. & I can't imagine these car manufacturers using tires that would make their owners b!tch & complain .. or am I completely out in left field?

Ciao!

find some beat up rims on ebay or something. Or rice it out by putting two used 18's on the front and steelies on the rears.

I'd find the smallest rims that will fit over your brakes. Although the sidewall is really flexible on snow tires, all that rubber helps with traction (allowing the contact patch to conform with the variety of winter surfaces.) There are also more 'sport' oriented snow tires available (check tirerack) that might perform decently and still be good in the snow.

I think an 18" snow tire, if they are even available, wouldn't be very effective in snow. Most 18" rims are what, 7.5" wide? A narrower tire/rim combo would definitely be a better option.

Just my $.02, I've spent a few years using snows.

Regards,
TOM
