auto tranny popped into neutral when I floored it...
hey,
I had a weird thing happen the other day. I was coasting in a line of traffic, waiting for an opening to get onto the entrance ramp to the freeway. When I saw an opening, I stomped on the gas, going from coasting and idling to full-out acceleration. The car didn't like that for some reason. I heard a "clunk" from underneath the car, the tranny popped into neutral, the "service engine soon" light came on, and the engine acted like it was flooded. I floored the gas, and it revved very very slowly. I put in back into drive, tried to accelerate. Nothing. So I pulled off the road, turned it off and waited a few seconds, then started back up. The car ran fine, but the "service engine" light stayed on. What happened? A friend of mine who used to be a service manager for a dealership theorized that since I was coasting and idling when I floored it, the EGR valve was all the way open. When I stomped on the gas, the engine computer didn't know what to do, and so popped the transmission into neutral. Has this ever happened to anybody else?

The ECU doesn't pop your tranny in or out of gears. Your tranny has it's own controller.
The car probably went to down shift into first, the delay was a bit long, and it felt like you hit neutral. At the same time you had probably pressed the gas pedal down so hard you went beyond the gas pedal sensor (drive by wire)which caused your car to go into limp mode.
You pulled over, shut the car off and restarted it. Now it's running correctly but the code has been stored in your ECU. Go to Nissan and have them see what actually happened, perhaps you need the gas pedal stopper replaced.
What dealership did your friend work for? His theory on the EGR doesn't make sense at all.

My 00 SE will sometimes sit and think for a sec when punched, then drop down to passing gear (even when you think you're in first), but she's never done what you're talking about. Bring that baby in. Can you say WARRANTY?!?!?!!

No, it actually popped into neutral. I looked down and the gearshift was in neutral. Maybe the big "clunk" I heard beforehand was the torque converter having a problem.
