Y-pipe question (different I hope)

I understand that the Y pipe adds noise to the exhaust, but is that extra noise coming from the front of the car or from the muffler?

So, if I just get a y pipe and stock exhaust, the sound from the stock muffler will be louder?

Also, consider that you're interior cabin will be alot more louder too.. but u gotta lose some to gain some... it is considered the best bang for the buck.
