OK, newbie's got some questions
Hey guys got a few questions to pick at your brains.
First:
I just bought a 1990 Maxima 114k(my first car), needs a little TLC, and im doing the basic repairs on it. I noticed that the car basically doesnt drive at all when using O/D, You can take off with it but once you pass about 55 it lets go. The engine just rev's up as if it werent even in gear, i've tried the tranny check you guys posted, and all the lights blink short (so its ok)But I cant use O/D almost at all. If i drive with it off, then engage it, i can usually ride it for a while before I hit a hill and it cant shift. But driving with the o/d off is fine, though when I really want to floor it, it red lines. Any suggestions on what this might be?
Second:
I still have the factory bose speakers installed, with their amps and they sound great. I recently bought a new cd player cuz the one the guy sold me with the car didnt even work. I got it at best buy and the guy refused to install it if i didnt buy this amp bypass kit. Im not stingy so the money wasnt the problem ($120) but I was wondering if it was even necessary. This guy was talking that they could catch fire?! Is this true or what? And even then, since the ouput of two amps (the stereo and the bose amps) is so high, it kinda kills the sound past volume level 10, anyone know how to bypass the amps manually?
Third:
The heater in the car doesnt work. The guy who sold me it said it might be the heater core but he wasnt sure. I checked the connections in the climate control box and found a loose pull cable. I plugged that in but it didnt do anything (if i even plugged it in the right place) Would it be in fact the heater core and if so how difficult would it be to change that out?
Fourth:
I got two non functioning power windows in the car. come to find out one is held up by a vice grip, the other the wiring assembley is shot. Any suggestions on how to get the wires back on, and an estimate on how much a new window regulators would cost?
Fifth:
While im driving my speedomoter starts to aim all over the place, then it stops functioning. I was told this could be because of a bad alternator. Had that checked and it came out ok. But the guy said the output was a little low, though he wasnt sure what the cars specs were. Any suggestions on this? And what about battery type/size.
Sixth:
Apparently my rackmount and lower control arm bushings are shot(Front). I cant find any place local to get them from. My friend (former midas guy) says he would do it for a small fee. We found a whole control arm at a junk yard but is that even a good idea? Im wondering also if this is something I could do myself? Any suggestions?
Seventh:
Do the 3rd Gen. GLE's come with keyless entry? If so how much would a new one be?
Any info I can get would be greatly appreciated
thanks

I didn't have time to jump into the other problems, but I saw that one and it is simple. Have fun.
1st: sounds like you tranny is slipping in o/d. could mean your tranny is going but i'm not really sure. your best bet is to take it to a tranny shop and have them diagnose it.
2nd: bypassing the amps is as easy as clipping 2 wires per speaker, because that's what you do. there are 4 wires per amp. 2 big, 2 small. the two big ones are poewr wires and the two small ones are speaker wires that are straight from the head unit. cut the two wires off (i can't really remember the colors so just check your speakers and match the colors for + and -) and then connect them to your new speakers. you might have to get some more wire and crimp or solder them on to the factory wire to give you a little more length but that's not too hard.
3rd: i'm having that same problem right now. i'm trying to figure out what all it could be. once i figure mine out i'll let you know what it could be.
4th: what pezking4 said
5th: speed sensor most likely. open the hood then go to the driver's side of the engine bay. if you look straight down you should see your tranny. look down at the tranny closest to the fire wall. there is this cylindrical thing sticking out of the tranny with one screw in it, the screw is kind of hidden behind the sensor but it's there) there are two wires coming out of it that are covered with one big black one. that is your speed sensor. either the wires are bad (like mine were) or the whole sensor is bad. my guess is the wires are bad because i had the same problem. my wires touched the manifold and melted the plastic revealing the wires. when i would move certain ways the wires would touch and the speedo would flip out. it eventually stopped working because the wires melted some more and were stuck together. if they are melted together you can undo that screw wiggle the sensor out, undo the wiring harness, and then cut off the bad wires (leave a tail on each end though so you can put some different wire on there). get some wire and crimp or solder it on there then tape it with electrical tape really well. now put it back in and it should work fine.
6th: if yours are bad and the one in the junk yard are good i would say go for it. other than that i couldn't help you on that one.
7th: the 3rd gens actually only came in SE and GXE. The GXE has a keypad entry under the doorhandle of the driver and passenger door. they did not have a key fob type keyless entry. there are aftermarket ones that you can buy though.

oh yeah, and you're not a newbie. you are a "I finally posted something" i don't understand why people get that mixed up.
some things to do while on this board though.
be sure to search a lot before you post a question. there are a lot of a$$holes here that will flame you to no end for not searching.
i wouldn't talk about turbocharging your car here. it's been talked about a lot and they would flame you to no end for it also.
that's pretty much all i can think of. if you find out that you don't like all of the flaming that goes on here check out http://www.nissanx.com we are a very peaceful community that does not allow flaming. we are kind of small right now, even though the original site, named maximanet.com, is actually older than maxima.org. we are called NissanX because our forum is for every nissan vehicle. although right now most of the members are maxima owners we are getting some more slowly but surely. Come check it out. It's a cool site.
