Here's what i did.
That damn thing is screwed on too tight.
I wrestled with it for 1 hour before i figured it out.
1) go get a small sawtooth knife, or one of those multi purpose saw tooth blades. or even a steak knife or a real saw. (can't be too big though). Whatever you get, it has to be teethed.
Mine is a GXE, so i had the rubber ****.
2) cut through the rummber ****. It is about an inch thick or so. Make mutliple cuts. I made about 5 lacerations.
When you cut enough, you will see that there is a "plastick core" that is screwed to the shifter.
The factory **** is GLUED to that plastic core. And the core is screwed on tight as hell. It is IMPOSSIBLE to simply twist the factory **** off.
3) next, go get a wrench and unscrew that plastic thing.
you can't do it by hand, you need a wrench or something like that. When it comes off, you will see the threaded shifter.

Re: NAHHHH~~`
Just use a wrench and twist it off. I agree that it's on there pretty damn tight, but just get a good grip. No need to cut it off. You might need it at some point in the future.
no No NO!!!!
JUST....wrap a dishtowel over the **** and put a vise grip wrench on it, or a channel lock or something. A longer handle will give you better leverage. Twist off COUNTER CLOCKWISE, break that initial seal and you are golden!
