auto shifts harder...

I read this post about unplugging the resistor on your left front strut tower making your shifts faster and harder. So i decided to try it out. MAN!! thats amazing!! But i do have a feeling it cant be too good for the transmission. can anyone tell me EXACTLY how to wire this to switch so I can use it whenever I want to? Thanks.

So does anyone know if running the Auto like this once in awhile is hard for the tranny in the long run?

Yes, I searched through old posts to find alot of the same questions. Just hoping someone might have some new input on using this on occasion...

Just be careful. Nobody knows for sure that this will trash your tranny. But, I am too scared to try this myself. That is why I have the actual valve body mod.

This mod works great, I have used it for over six months on all my runs at the track. It shifts much faster and harder than any VB modification but it is not for casual driving, its WOT or nothing, hence the switch. When I am running a 100 shot or better it actually gets rubber on the 2-3 shift but I am geared pretty low with the 22" tires. My speedo reads 125 mph at the end of the 1/4 and I am actually only doing around 105 mph.

The flashing light will reset itself when you switch it back.

Thanks to Ben for this one. Cheapest and one of the best mods out there.

If's Jime has been doing this with his 100-shot on slicks and had no problems, I seriously doubt anyone with a N/A Max will.

No offense, but thats like answering "a long time" when someone asks how long tires last. There are better examples but you'll get my point. As I have learned on this org over many years, everything depends on (semi)random events. One person can have their tranny last for years, another can have it blow next week. It depends on how you drive it, how you take care of it, etc.
Just because Jime doesnt have any problems, how is that a guarantee that no one else will have problems with it? How many miles does Jime have on his transmission? Does he baby it on the street? Does he have LSD? Like many people have said, it all depends on many factors. I personally have never considered this mod because of my high milage, and probably will never try it. A VB mod seems to be enough of a kick for me.

Like I said, dont take this personally.

well i'll be the first to admit (besides Jime) that i tried this since i was hella bored and broke. i wired in a simple switch i had for a set of fog lights i installed in my g/f's car. pretty simple and straight forward.

impressions:
seeing as i haven't ridden in a car with the vb mod, i'm not going to compare and say one is better. but with it on and a full throttle run, i CAN chirp into second. is this something for everyday driving? god no. my girlfriend hated it when i was showing it to her. its extremely rough and uncomfortable for a day to day drive. the shifts come hard and fast. it also probably puts more strain on the rest of your car.

would i recommend over vb?:
eh, your call. maxximum tuning offers different levels of vb mods from street to strip. i'd say this mod is probably comporable to the strip version of the vb. it applies full line pressure. i'd do the vb but i'm saving for a 5 sp swap and this was a "free" mod.

down sides:
damn CEL does NOT go off once you flip the switch back to normal. well, it does, but then the next time you start your car it'll be back on, then it'll turn off and so forth. i imagine if i would get off my lazy *** and reset my CEL, it would stay off until i flipped the switch again.

happy modding!

I agree with you 100%. It definitely matters from car to car. I just said that I was doubting somebody with a N/A Max would have problems from it. I could be wrong, but I could be right. Just an assumption.

Cheap mod?? I'm there! So the good thing is that it can be turned off so that normal driving resumes, correct? If so then maybe the tranny should last normally assuming nobody's being a dumbass with the switch. I can see it now, turning it on while street rac..urr, i mean track racing. Kicka$$!

I saw th '95 writeup. I meant one for the 2K2 and has anyone actually done this on a 2K2.

I should've been more specific, I guess, but thought my previous post would explain what I'm talking about.

Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to make myself clearer.

I tested this out

I tested this tip out on my '95 max auto...
My findings were the following:

Racing or hard driving it shifts hard but doesnt appear that it would do any damage, chirps 3rd gear but it doesnt slam into each gear.

The caution flag for me though is the around town driving, it shifts really hard even at low speeds which could damage the transmission... several times it slams into the next gear at low speeds.

In any case, id hope anyone who wants to use this on a 95 max would go the switch route. )

Reset mine back to what it was. No problems here.

still havent done mine yet but i plan to. this is definitely the way to go... forget the hundreds of $$$ for the VB mod.. this is just as good ... only way to do it though is a switch.. it sucks at low speeds. I feel like i am hurting the car!

No, I don't know anyone who's done this on a 2k2. The procedure and the effects should be the same. I nominate you as the guinea pig. The only issue I see is that you can't easily reset your CEL.

I have a 97 GXE auto, and when I did this mod, the CEL only came on when I first started the car after plugging the resistor back in. It blinked for 5 seconds then went off. It hasn't come back on since.

Yeah, on my 95 max too.
Thats easy enough that you could put a switch on it and not worry about no lights freaking out when u start your car everytime.
Smog stations love that.. heh

Gee thanks, Ben. My local Dealer will love to look under my hood.
(have the Injen awaiting a MAF failure any day - I have the "one that WILL go bad".
Yeah, the 2K2 CEL reset issue once again would rear it's ugly head.

I think they're a lot more tempermental than the 4th gens. It would suck to have it come on and not go off till a dealer could reset it.
Although, it would almost be worth it to shift past blubyu2k2 this weekend.

Thanks for the info. I may try it anyway but may try to find a non-destructive way to tap in (maybe at a point of s connector.

I could put a "NOS" sticker on - then they'll have to believe it.

Actually, I don't think I want to mess with putting full pressure on the tranny w/o some work on the Valve Body. Need some high quality internals to feel comfortable with it. And if I get a VB job, why do the cut-out. Not enough miles on it yet to subject it to this, me thinks.

Next guinea pig..... walk on up! (sorry Ben, find yo'sef anudder car) I do hate the shifting on these autos though (sigh)......wanders off dragging a tranny cooler behind him ....

I don't think this mod really does anything but make you feel the shifts.
