How long did your original clutch last?

I'm pretty sure my clutch is only about 5,000 km away from death. It has about 105,000km on it. I got the car at about 80,000km.

I'm just curious how long your clutches lasted.

i have just under 80,000 and my clutch was strong as heck until about two months ago.... when i supercharged it... now...within a few weeks it is jello... so i got a ACT stage 2 and aluminum flywheel in it... gets installed this weekend as for you... at over 100,000 that's great... i think if you have alot of mods you should go with an aftermarket one... good luck bro

I'm sure I could've gotten way more than 100,000 if I had the car from new. Most often, passengers don't realize I drive a stick shift because I drive smooth, rev match, don't ride the clutch, etc.

Re: How long did your original clutch last?

I had mine replaced around 80k. I drive my car harder than I should. I thought that I would save money going to a "transmission shop." I ended up having to get the work done right at the dealer for actually less money than the other place and it wass done right. The other place used the wrong clutch and it messed some things up. Check into different options.

How much did the dealership charge you for the job (labour, parts)?

OE clutch lasted about 155k miles.
replaced with ACT and rebuilt tranny w/ new bearings and synchros about 158k or so.

at 172k, a shift fork broke in the rebuilt tranny and FUBAR'd gears 2,3,4. I bought a reman tranny then and a LuK clutch.
I'm now about 185k miles and the LuK is slipping when I do a hard shift into 3rd or 4th.. if I just floor it while drivin, it doesn't slip in any gear, but if I shift into a high gear hard, it'll start to slip and the RPM climb to redline wlihe the clutch makes nasty smells.

Good thing it's got an 18k mi warranty on it.

Mine was similar to Matt's. It was fine until just before 160,000 miles. Then my slave cylinder decided to mess up one night and to get the car back home I had to do some nasty no clutch engagement and shifting which ruined the clutch. 1st to 2nd is really harsh when the tranny starts to heat up from driving.

I've got 140,000 miles on my original clutch and it still works great. No complaints here. Of course, my car is stock. But that's all going to change. You'll see! You'll see! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Sorry about that, I feel better now.

i changed mine out at 80K.....it would slip a little after a hard lauch (if you got it hot). the original owner was hard on this car for the first 50K. when I took it out it was sooooo close tot he rivets, I was glad I had changed it....the pedal feel was much improved too. I am more used to gettign 140+ out of a clutch...but all depends on how you treat it.

I got my car with 71,000km and I assume it had the original clutch. Now it has 121,000km and the clutch feels much better than my buddy's Jetta with 20,000km.

BTW I learned how to drive stick on this clutch (didn't take long)

I changed mine at around 115,000 I think, I could make it slip if I wanted to really get on it. It really took some abuse while it was in there. It still had life but I was going off to school and couldn't have it go out while I was away from home. Had to do it at home so I could do it myself and save lot of money. I think so peoples poor clutch life has to do with some people just don't know how to drive, but another thing that I have noticed is that some people gear down when they come to a stop, that is 2 times more clutch engagements to go through and aren't necessary, and it is bring a idle motor up to several thousand RPM, that is a bring difference to overcome, much more than giving the motor a little RPM to let the clutch out to launch the car.

Is that true? Hmmm...never really thought about that. I usually downshift when approaching a red light. I'm trying to get out of that habit because I have new pads/rotors now so I don't have to baby the brakes as much. Now I should probably baby the clutch by not downshifting. I have 86K on the original clutch and it feels the same as when I bought the car with 46K on it. When the Nissan clutch finally kicks the bucket, I'll go with an ACT. How long is the break in period on the ACT clutch?

I brake with the transmission too. That's the way you're suppose to do it...but maybe not. New brake pads are ALOT cheaper than a clutch. I have 85K miles on my original pads. That seems like alot.

I got 95,000 on my first set of front brakes and 130,000 on the rear brakes, and I don't use the transmission to slow me down when stopping. I usually just leave it in 5th gear until I get down to about 25 MPH and then push the clutch in. Seems to work great.

I have 152,000 on 95 SE. I use the car hard. Still original clutch, changed the original front brakes at 120,000 and rears at 140,000. Still trying to figure out why they lasted so long. The fronts are now ready to be changed again, but clutch still going strong (knock on wood).

if you guys MUST downshift i'd advise to learn how to single clutch/match rev downshift at least. the whole point of downshifting is to get the engine in the powerband when selecting a lower gear, not to slow the car down. however it preserves the brakes and adds control when going down long hills. if you're a fanatic like i am you can learn to double clutch/match rev downshift. when i first started learning, cheston suggested www.turnfast.com

108,000 miles on strong original clutch with tons of 2nd gear chirping. I'm lucky so far I guess. I don't engine brake, just drop it in neutral and keep my foot off the clutch always unless I'm changing gears.

My clutch lasted to 80k, then I got the ACT Stage 3, not the frendliest clutch, but chirping the tires shifting into third is well worth it....

For all you guys that like to chirp your gears . . .

why do you like it so much? Often, your times will be better without the chirping. Also, it puts a lot of stress on your drive train, not to mention engine mounts, tranny mounts, etc.

I understand that it has cool factor, but I almost never chirp my ACT. I only chirp a little when I'm racing, which I'm not doing until it breaks in, and even then, I'll only chirp a little when racing. In fact, when I race, I try to prevent over chirping so I won't sping unecessarily.

I dont chirp my tires on a regular basis, I actually like the smooth feel of a quick non-slip shift. There are times though that the stage three makes me want to put a stock clutch back in...
