Got bored today - new mod

Today I was bored so I decide to make the home made intake from a generic cone filter using the instructions found here

Here's some pictures of my newest mod.

I took it out for a quick spin around the block. Man it get's loud from 3500 rpm and up.
Not sure I like it though - it sounds like one of those Honda fart cans..

No noticable gains at this point, but it was fun.

I may try the $15 home made midpipe to see if it quietens down at all.

I just put it back to stock for now - I may re-do it once I get a Y pipe.

Sounds like a honda fart can? I find the comparison between an intake in the engine bay and a farty sounding exhaust pipe coming out the rear end of a car completely different. Exhaust = rear end, Intake = front end.

The only fart sound coming out of our cars is if it has an exhaust and between 2-3k rpm.

Yeah a HAI will sound loud to you but outside it is probably the most quiet of the intake variety.

I am surprise you did not feel the power gain. I felt it right away.

If when you do the $15 upper intake pipe you use the rubber coupling, as opposed to the metal exhaust tube version, you'll get a modest increase in noise but it won't sound as mean. The pitch will change some. I've had my best runs w/ the $15 pipe but prefer the sound of the cone w/ the stock midpipe. It's got more of a growl. I haven't heard the metal version other than frankencar and similar setups and they are considerably louder than the rubber coupling. Hope this helps.

I did that ghetto *** mod. Got my instructions from http://www.brianv.net/mods/filter and the damn filter kept popping off, no matter how tight/lose the thing was, i wasnt about to tape my **** either, so I put the stock air box back on... I got the MAF adapter from Cattman, only problem now, is it bounces around and ****. But oh well.

Either you had the wrong parts or did not install something right.

Used that gold plate that I had to drill out the rivets(easier, and wont bend the thing). Dunno I guess the filter didnt like the "lip" the gold piece had. I have a Weapon-R V2 Hyper Filter. Has anyone bought just the midpart and the hoses/fittings from Cattman or some place like that? I mean, All i want is basically the combo intake from Cattman, but I dont need the filter and the MAF adapter as I already have that crap. I suppose I could call them, but Im a shy guy.

You can get the mid-pipe from a few places. Frankencar, a guy on ebay(Dohccivic), or make your own. There is probably a couple more. Maybe the filter just does not go with the MAF adapter. I believe the Weapon R uses a foam filter which i don't think is a good idea to use.
The instructions you used for the "ghetto" mod worked great for me. It's just a cone filter, MAF adapter, and a mid-pipe. There really is nothing complicated about it that your filter should be comming off.

Foam Filters

I dont know why people make out foam filters to be such crap. I mean, I have a foam filter on my dirt bike, and i honestly have had a THICK layer of dust on the filter(to the point where I could hit it and chunks fell off) and my air box was still dust free. IMHO if you know what the hell you are doing with a foam filter youll be fine.

I've seen a couple foam filters and what seems dangerous about them is the foam comming apart and getting sucked into the TB. Not that they don't filer well.
The ones i have seen don't have a good metal screen like casing to keep the foam from coming apart.

The foam will only come apart if you poke it with sticks and ****. :P Yeah, this filter has mesh inside and out. IMO its a damn nice filter considering i got it for $20 and it retails around $80. So yeah..

Re: Got bored today - new mod

I dont think this would really make any difference, but you still have most of the stock intake set up still in the engine bay. I completely took out the stock set up (airbox, ram air tube, and stock mid pipe) maybe that is to cause for your ricey sound??? Just a thought...

and did i read correctly, a metal mid pipe will make it louder than a plastic/rubber one? I have a stillen high flow intake with a long rubber coupling replacing the stock midpipe. it changed the sound a bit, its more bubbly at high rpm's, not quite as deep as when it was just the stillen setup. but will a metal midpipe give me more performance than what i have on at the moment??

I have had just the cone filter, rubber mid section, and metal mid sectioin.
Very little performace between the the 3. As far as my Butt dyno goes maybe a tiny bit of low end back with a mid section.
The noise gets louder going from stock mid resonator to rubber to metal.
The metal is the loudest but not the deepest.
If you have the rubber one now, the metal will just look better and be a more permenant set up. You will see no real performace gain.

This is all just my opinion. No dynos or track times between the 3 set ups.
