What do u call the thing that looks like it takes in air rite near front held by plas

sorry I ran out of room in the subject space. I want to know the name of the thing that looks kind of like some kind of vacuum cleaner attachment. It is held in place right on what would be the sucking end of the vacuum by two plastic screw fasteners. I had to move it to be able to move the fan and shroud when I replaced my alternator. I want to know what it is cause I'm repsonding to a survey about the service that I have been receiving at the Nissan dealerships. I intend to comment about the fact that some fasteners should be replaced when they take them off to do repairs. I am mentioning the screws at the part that I'm referring to here as well as those that hold the splash guards around the fender in place. Thanks.

P.S. If all you're going to do is tell me to search again, this post is not for you. Close it and go about your friggin business. Otherwise, thanks a bunch in advance!

Well, you know. I have been flamed a few times.
Thanks for the info. Man if that thing is the stock air intake I can see why an upgrade would help w/ hp and what not. That thing is just plastic, for one thing.

But yeah man. I mean people will actually put links to the search page in their replies. I'm like, the effort they had to expend to go to that page, copy the link, and come back to their post and pace the link, they could have just told me the answer. I understand that some guys honestly want to 'teach a man to fish', but come on.

Somewhere, a team of Nissan engineers hearts were just broken...

really though, how often do you see cars that *dont* have plastic intake inlets/connecting pieces? It's routing air, what's the big deal?

Well, I was actually just going by the fact most people say they see at least a 10 hp increase when they upgrade their intakes. I can't imagine that there is some kind of revolutionary engineering in the aftermarket ones so I was guessing that the material used had to make a difference. If I'm wrong, what is it about the aftermarket intakes that give an hp increase? Is it that they let more air in?

the stock ones are puposly built to be restrictive. This helps keep the car quiter. Most people in general when buying a new car want one that is quieter rather than giving up 5hp. Plus the Maxima enters more into the Luxury sedan as well so being loud would not help the initial sales.

If you remove the stock resonators from the stock intake tract and add a K&N filter panel, you'll make the same overall power and peak power from 2000-5500rpms as a POP/hybrid. I proved this on the dyno.

Recently I've chopped up my stock airbox and the car has a nice growl that's about 50% as loud as a POP/hybrid. The cool thing is that when I lift the hood, everything looks stock. That's assuming the observer doesn't know that the VI manifold isn't a US-spec part

I can't tell any discernable difference in ultimate performance between this modified stock airbox setup and my HKS hybrid setup. I do know that my car feels stronger off the line and entering each gear with the modified airbox. It's also quieter and smoother which I personally like.

It's good to keep that intake tract in place if you get an aftermarket cone intake, since it helps bring at least a little cooler air into the engine bay....

This is exactly the mod I'm looking for. I prefer to keep the noise to a minimum, but would like the gains of an intake mod. What exactly are the stock resonators? How do you remove them? Once I remove them do I need to add anything in their place? Do you have any pictures? What do you mean you "chopped up your airbox"? Could you be more specific?

Eh, if you want a quiet "intake-like" results, just get a better flowing filter. You dont have to go cone as that will make stuff louder. Go to pepboys or some place like that and ask for a K&N Filter your your car.

dave b, does this mean that (even though i have a pop charger) that removing the resonator will increase/speed up air flow through that tract? and bring more air rushing in?

there is no point removing the resonators if u already have a pop charger... the modified stock is just a cheap way of gettint the same affect.. i did it myself too on my max..i was hesitane at first because the stock 2.5 by 5(rouf estimate) inch hole that the stock piping leads into is facing the engine(hotter air).. but i decided to take off that big *** stock tubing anyway.it does make a positive difference and keeps noise down to a minimum. if your not a fan of the noisy intake sound but want that increeased air flow..do this.its easy.. 2 screws i think and jsut pull it off. the lead hose into tge raditaor migh be in the way..jsut keep pulling. ur pulling off the air piping piece that connects to the lower half portion of the air box.. ..make sure u use a k & n though..u can do this is pretty much any car..not jsut the max.. every car has a buncho of restricting intake piping to make the car quieter..k.thats my 2 cents. laters
