Sporadic clunking sound

Hi all...Well, my problem is....I get a sporadic clunking sound from the front left side of the car. Clunks when I start from a roll, change gears, and even over dips on the highway. I can feel it in the pedals sometimes. However, everytime I take it to the shop, it won't make the noise--like the car has a mind of its own. They don't think it's the struts, springs or motor mounts, and have regreased the suspension components. Even changed the upper/lower control arms. Visiual inspection shows nothing wrong. Any ideas? Anyone experienced something similar? Thanks!

Um, your car doesn't have an upper control arm.

Oops....well, something down there got replaced, but it was a few months ago, so I must've been confused....
