Auto Transmission "Sweating"
Auto Transmission "Sweating"
Just find out that my 10 year-old GXE auto tran has been sweating lately as I can see from the case, but only half of them got sweating. So what's wrong? Does it affect the tran fluid level? Any bad sign? In fact, it is not leaking, but just got oil stain all over the case. Suggestions?
Thanks a lot!

ummm, that probably means it's being sprayed onto it from somewhere else. check your hoses and make sure one of them hasn't ruptured. also check the tranny cooler part of the radiator. (follow the small hoses from the tranny up to the radiator. you'll see where they go). then look for the source of the fluid.
If you're lucky, it's only a ruptured hose. easy enough to replace.

Thanks. But it seems quite complicated to me. I got Nissan 1985-92 Repair Manual book from Chilton's, but don't know what & where to look for. Where is tranny cooler part of the radiator? You mean only the hose(s)? I know my friend had 92 Camry and he took it to the repair shop for sweating tranny. After fixing, it stopped sweating. So he thought it might be the leaking from tranny or one of the sealers are broken. Is he right?

if it's sweating through the case gasket..i would dare say it's almost normal for a 10 yr old tranny. the internal pressure of the case is pretty high. from old age some fluid will pass through it...but just a small amount.
the point is, they can't just "sweat" like that.. lubriacants can't pas through metal, as the metal doesn't have pores.. the stuff has to come form somewhere other than just mysteriously oozing out of the tranny.. there's got to be a bad gasket or seal or hose or something that's causing it.
poke around and see if you can find something leaking down there.. the service manual won't tell you much about it until you find what part is messed up.. then use the manual to figure out how to replace the part.

yeah the RE4FO2A have a nice gasket that runs down the middle of the tranny at the bottom...i'm pretty sure it's seeping/sweating through that.

if it's seeping/sweating, is it a bad sign or does it cause tranny to fail? Shall I take it to the dealer or Lee Myles for fixing? Who can do a better job in terms of tranny?

if your tranny is running fine except for the seeping..then drive it and watch the fluid level. when it's rebuild time go to someone that u know or from a good recommendation. "chain" tranny shops tend to rip people off...so shop wisely.

1) Does this count a problem when you press gas pedal to start from stop during bumper to bumper traffic that you feel a hesitation? I mean I didn't hard start, but just press the gas pedal as usual and you can feel that you were pused;
2) How to check the fluid level? According to the manual, you have to stop the car for at least 1/2 hour right after highway driving and when it comes to check the level, the car should be running. However the result will be different when the engine is not running. The level of running engine will be higher than the latter situation. So what's the correct way of doing this?
3) When is the rebuild time? I got 111500 miles on the car and I don't drive very hard, but a lot of local driving or daily commuting.
4) A friend of mine had his 92 Camry done for 80 bucks for the same problem at the local Mobil station. Is it good place to go?
Again, thanks for your time!

2- after u drive let it sit..then check level w/ car in P and level ground...ENGINE RUNNING!
3- no way to determine rebuild time...80K...100K...120K..150K...mainteance is key here.
4- like i said it can be ANYTHING on the car...most likely for 80 bucks it's "probably" not transmission related. if you're in doubt take it to someone to have them look at it.
good luck.

in other words...it's not going to help.
