185 miles to a half tank.....

Driving like a old woman (except for one awesome launch at a red light; because the car in the next lane was askign for it) and keeping the MPG counter b/w 23.x and 24.x from last fill-up to now, i hit the halfway mark at 185.5 miles...... no idea how good that is.... i use to get no less than 300 miles before the gas light came on in my 99 auto prelude.

Re: 185 miles to a half tank.....

I do mostly freeway driving, and i consistantly get 350 to 370 miles on a tankful of gas doing 60MPH to 80MPH speeds. Your numbers sound good. Too bad you have to drive like a granny to get it though.

That is not a very accurate way to gauge fuel economy.

Fill it all the way up. Drive a few hundread miles worth. Record the miles driven. Fill back up all the way and record the exact number of gallons needed. Do the math.

The light comes on anywhere from 3-5 gallons from what other members have reported in threads over time.

I consistantly get between 200-220 in my 5 speed..are you driving an auto or manual? That would seem good for an auto...I also get around 350-400 miles per tank, the most I have ever gone is 414 miles with just barely over a quarter gallon of gas left...I have never run out of gas.

From my understanding though, if you are driving an auto, you are doing just about right for mileage

Then what exactly is your question (other than the light)?

How are you getting 200-220 on 1/2 tank? I'm happy to get 200. Usually only get 185. That is with a 5-speed, doing 90% highway driving at 65-75mph. What's your secret?

Gas Cheaper on Sundays?!

Ok, I knew it was more expensive on Friday/Saturday -- but cheaper on Sundays???

Is this true all-over the country?? I never pay THAT much attention....

And isn't it cheaper during the week rather than WEEKENDS???

HELP?! I want cheap gas too??!!

Whoa...I never heard of it being more expensive on Fri/Sat???? Around me (NY) they used to run "Wacky Wednesdays" where there was a few cents off on Wed.

I'm gonna keep my eyes pealed now!

Hey, just a side note I've heard that it is no good to let your car's tank go below 1/2 in the winter due to deposits on the bottom of the tank messing up the engine. Oh, and NEVER fill up when the tanker trucks are filling the station tank...that kicks up all kinds of nastiness!

I don't know about half-tank, but I get about 450 per tank with a 16-17 gallon fillup. When I really get on the gas it drops to about 380miles per tank. When I'm all highway it gets closer to 480-500 per tank.

Keep it between 2k and 3k rpm and mileage goes way up.

Even on a road trip I've never seen close to 400 on a tank! You guys must really be light on the peddle....do you put it in neutral and coast down hills too??? Just kidding on the neutral comment...

Seriously, the best I've gotten on my 97 or 02 (both autos) is around 350 a tank. I just calculated my overall average since buying mu 02 and I'm at 19.3 with mostly street driving. It's better than I thought and about the same as my 97.

LEAD FOOT

.....crap!

Just did the math -- and I'm getting like 15-17mpg on 93octane, but I do MOSTLY city driving and short morning commutes.
And yes - I hammer it WHENEVER i get an open stretch of road! (damn that 6spd!)
For a few pennies more of gas per week -- DAMN it's WORTH iT!

I thought this thing'd get about the same as my '98auto, but that's a pipedream!

What the heck happened to VARIABLE VALVE TIMING????!!

This is me. 12 mile round trip commute to work - but it takes 25 minutes each way due to the local traffic (I have to go through all school zones to get to work). Causes the MPG to stay around 16-17. It sucks, but I love the max.

You mean to tell us you're getting close to 30 mpg highway? Is your SE auto of 6 sp? and what cruise speeds do you keep it at to get 500 miles? The best range I ever got out of my 2k1 SE 5 sp. was about 460 miles (throwing it in neutral and coasting whenever possible) and as I turned into the gas station, the engine started sputtering... The best mileage was 27 mpg.

Yes. Below is after normal commuting (about 25mpg). Sometimes it's higher but not usually lower than this. My commute is 44 miles round trip, about 10 is city, then 34 highway. I don't really race my car or accelerate quickly (when I'm concerned with gas mileage, anyway ). I usually go about 65 or 70 all the way.

When I drive to my parents I go 285 miles one way, all highway. When I do that I get over 30mph and I've done it a bunch of times so I'm not calculating it wrong. I set the cruise control at 73 and wait about 4 hours and I'm there.

I have 2k2 6-speed. I'm going north in a few weeks. I'll pay attention to mileage and snap another picture with miles over 520 and gallons under 17.

Like I said, driving a 5-speed really helps, I do about 70/30% highway/around town driving, and yes, I do have have an occasional led foot, but most of the time, I will just cruise at 70-75...I try as much as possible to keep my rpm's around 2,500.

i get 200 on a full tank.... since its that bad i had it checked out at the dealership. they told me i needed service.. everything else is ok. so i got the service. no change in mpg, then they said clean injectors, did that, no change, then i got the tranny serviced... no change.. then i finally decided to change all six injectors and ignition coils... still no change... what else could be wrong with my car. i have no engine lights at the moment.

Can't really fully answer your question without more information like:

length of trips
city or highway
stoplight to stoplight OR full stop and go traffic
whether you keep your tires at the proper inflation
etc.

Wouldn't it be a b!tch if the guy spent all that money on that work for 1 mile commutes in underinflated tires???

just a quick reminder, dont let the tank go down past the E mark. sorry i dont mean to be stupid. Cause I started the car up, and no go, it starts for about a second or to, then dies. It was right below the E.

Sorry I was used to my 87 max (which I still love), which went way past the mark, ( you knew you had time to get gas ) Luckly both times I was in front of my house.

The low fuel light didn't remind you to stop for a fill up? I am not hassling you, but if you didn't have a light on, you might want to get that indicator looked at.

It only comes on with about 3-5 gallons left.

Guess I am just used to living out aways from the 'city' where my nearest gas station (when it is open) is about 9 miles away. You get used to filling up whenever there is only 1/4 tank left.

what is the single most important component in an engine that would markedly increase mileage? i'm just about hitting the 40k mile mark on my 97gxe 5speed. the best mileage i've ever gotten was around 28mpg. that was two summers ago with lots of highway driving. from week to week i usually get at least 400 miles per tank. i noticed around winter the mileage drops quite considerably. nobody has been able to explain to me why this happens. maybe it's because the cold air is so much more dense and harder to ignite? or perhaps its the change of fuel mixture? is anyone can answer these questions that would be great.
