What are my sub options?...

I have a '96 GXE with an RSTB in the trunk, and I'd like a little bass to add to my system. I have an Eclipse 54400 headunit and Boston Acoustics FX-6 speakers all around. Is the Basslink my only option because of the RSTB? How to they sound? I'm not looking for competition bass, just a little more kick to my mini-system. Oh yeah, something light would be nice too.
Thanks,
-Cyrus

You can easily go with somthing custom that could go right over it.

Is there anything I can do in the cabin? I would like to put a sub somewhere in there, because I value the trunk space now that it's already limited.
Thanks,

Yes but nothing that your gonna wanna pay for, it would take work.

AS far as trunk space goes, if you go with a single 10 or 2 8"s, somthign like that would be easy to make out of the way, either in one side panel recesed, or up in the deck, tire well anything like that. just depends on a little money to do the glass work to make it look right.

Do some custom work, and mount your subs on the rear deck.

Just a suggestion.......

Vyrus,

If you want to save trunk space and you aren't trying to compete at soundoffs you could get a box thats made for a pickup truck. They arent as big as regular boxes, but they are significantly smaller than regular boxes. Also I noticed you live in P-Town, I live in the beach and got a hookup at Discount Auto Sound. If you need anything I could see what I could do.

Hehe thanks man but I have a hookup at Premier Autosound. Discount is nice though, I've been to the one on Va Beach Blvd a ton of times, I go to school very close to it.

I've been thinking of either the JL Stealthbox or a really small box w/ a Kicker Solobaric L7 in it. I listened to a Basslink today and didn't really like the quality. I don't want to put anything in the rear deck because that would require cutting the chassis, and I don't want anything that permanent. I hear Alpine was making some ultra-slim sumwoofers now. Could I run one or two of those under my seats? I'm willing to spend probably up to $700 including the install and amps, I know that won't go too far but like I said I don't want a prize-winning setup, just something that will add sufficient kick while being small and out-of-the-way.
Thanks,
-Cyrus

Anyways guys I was thinking about the JL Stealthbox.
You can't put a sqaure peg in a round hole meanign the stealthbox is for a round sub, the L7 is square.

Thinest subs around are the Illusion audio subs I think a 10" is aroudn 1 and a 1/4 deep ". And requrique .5cub for the enclosure.

Putting a sub under the seat will require cutting and will never fit in for 700 bucks. I say look into a custom fiberglass box to go int the cubby hole behind the tail light. And put the amp on the other side. This with an amp will prob come to around 1 g. But it's out of the way. Doing anything that will be more than just a bought box will be mroe than 700 with a good amp, unless you hit ebay.

Yeah I know it won't fit, but I'm talking about a different setup, maybe something like what you just said. Basically anywhere I can put a 10" Solobaric out of the way is good. Behind the taillight seems great since nobody puts stuff in there unless I'm cramming the trunk. I was hoping $700 will be enough but I guess not. I can get the solobaric damn cheap (under $230 shipped I believe), but I know the custom box will be expensive and I have no idea what kind of huge amp I would have to pair it with.
Thanks for the info,

If you go with a fiberglass box the box should sit back in just like the factory panel with a simple grill so you could still cram stuff in there like normal, thats one reason i suggested it. And then the amp could go on the other side in a similar fashion.

As far as amps go unless you really want some loud bass, and from what you said you don't, you dont' need mad power...So finding an amp that can provide around 500 watts at 2ohms would be great.

look into the IDQ 10/12 V.2 @ carmedia1.com

these subs play in very small enclosures and have great sound quality,
they aren't too expensive and match these with a JBL sub amp(bsless.com) and you have a great sounding system that cost's a little more than the basslink.

Seven,

Would you recommend an adire shiva 12" or the idq 12" both are around $120 something? I am too looking for a sub and amp for around the price of a basslink.

For a small or stealth install the Shiva would not do. It needs about 2 cubic feet I think. Unless the specs changed with the revision 3. I can't remember the specs for the IDQ subs. But I think there is another sub on the Adire site now that has similar performance to the Shiva but with better specs for car audio. Meaning it will hit the low notes more easilly in a small box.

Okay, just looked at both drivers specs and they would end up with very similar response. Similar Vas and Qts. Both would probably enjoy 50-55 liters sealed. Or just under 2 cubic feet.

If you don't mind not having a spare, then building an amp rack/small sub enclosure there will save tons of room. I'm currently redoing my trunk. I'm keeping my sub box but moving 2 amps down to the spare tire location. On long trips, I can just throw the spare into the trunk.

if you have the trunk space then get the Shiva: it has the same sound quality as the IDQ and can get louder. One thing I don't like about the Shiva is the dual 8 Ohm voice coil b/c sub amps make their most power at 1/2 ohms.

one more thing, the Shiva can be used in a free-air application, something to think about if you don't have trunk space.

you could do a passthrough sub box, you would still have quite a bit of room for stuff in the trunk/
