Tire Advice Please

I am in the market for a replacement for the stock Potenzas. They really suck in the snow. I was thinking about the Pilot A/S since everyone agrees that they are #1. However, the price is a bit too steep. Can you guys recommend different tires? Maybe second best or third best for stock rims? Thanks!

Re: Tire Advice Please

All season tires generally suck in the snow - period - except for when they're new and have a nice thick tread. You could probably enjoy a new pair of RE92's in the snow almost as well as a pair of A/S's...

The two things you need for winter/snow driving : a tire with good tread to mush through the snow, and compound that will not harden in the cold.

Get a good winter tire if you want good snow handling, otherwise any decent all season tire will serve you just as well as those more expensive A/S's. If you are looking for a good tire, do a search on the forum as there are plenty of good discussions about it.

newbiemaxowners -

ill save y2kse the trouble

there is a ton of info on the site already about this. you can also try to search. here is the best link to the info i used for making my mind up.

as for 17" tires, good luck! i really had my heart set on 235/45/17 ... but they all have 8" tire width, and i just didnt feel safe putting them on our 7" wheels.

my pix would be sumitomo htr+ (which is what i had ordered then cancelled) and if not those, the potenza RE950 which is a great great tire. in addition, the cooper lifeline SLE is a touring tire that just came out and it has been getting great reviews.

good luck !

Check out the http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp. I have the BFG G Force KDWS. For $100, not a bad tire for the $$$.

235/45-17

I am new to this tire/rim sizing, but it seams everyone is saying you need 8" width on 17" wheels for a 235/45-17 tire? I looked everywhere and in fact just bought (not here yet) a set of 17" wheels with an 8" width and ordered the 235/45-17 tires, so I sure hope they will work. I just spent about $1800. Please tell me this is correct!

Your tire and rim selection was a good one. You could have gotten by with a 7.5"-wide rim and remained in-spec, but from a handling standpoint, you're better off having gone with a wider rim.

For a complete listing of acceptable rim widths by tire size, go to page 5 of the FAQs and look at the Tire & Rim Association Contour (Rim Width) Charts.

I'm a new member here - been lurking for a while, mostly drooling over some of the cars I've seen.

I just put a set of Pirelli Winter 210's on the stock (17x7") wheels - same size as the stock tire. Absolutely incredible snow traction, and you'll get far more life out of them than the Blizzaks.

www.tirerack.com <---been buying tires from them for years. The Pirelli's are a bit expensive, but they'll last at least 3 or 4 winters if you don't burn them up on the asphalt.

I just ordered some steel wheels and pilot alpin snow tires, hopefully I will get them on before the next snow. Thats what I would suggest, the all seasons are generally not good in severe winter weather. If you use winter wheels you get a much larger selection of sizes, I ordered 225/55/16, plus all the salt messes up the alloy wheels anyway.
