'98 or '99

i was wondering what year maxima i am better of buying '98 or '99 assuming they have the same mileage? what is the difference in those years, if there is any? i read that '99s have coil problem.......should this be a concern?

Your better off getting a 99 only if it's a SE-limited, If not then get a 98SE.

Yep, i read that before too. It's not that much info. and the "trouble spots", nothing happaned on my '95 Max like that. so i figure if no one here is talking about the problems in '99 models or the coil problem is not such a big deal, then i guess i will go with '99s since they got redesigned HU, and some add-on in climate control.

what is it with SE-L pkg. i thought that the differences are only perforated leather seats and titanium rims.

'99 SE-L too...stripped version...no leather, no sunroof, no S&C. Were body colored mudflaps an option?

I thought the SE-L package was a little stiffer than the other models? Flame away, I'm only guessing.

as far as i read on this forum the changes in loaded SE-L are as i stated. what i wanna get is '99 loaded 5-speed maxima, and so far i don't see major defference between SE and SE-L.

The only difference with the SE-L is not stiffer springs or anything like that, It's the same maxima with SE-l carpets and a different radio unit and the 99 sucks because you have 4 O2 sensors and the 98 only has 2 which is better also the 99se-l has an swirl valve for the intake air comming in.

It's better to have 2 oxygen sensors to replace costing about 90 bucks each than 4, get the 98 and this is from a person that has a 99SE-l, It makes no difference performance wise.

thanks, VERY helpful, but i still have a question....

so your only concern is 4 O2 Sensors? Because i had '95 Max with 160k and changed one sensor once (possibly it was changed at the time of purchase too, b/c i had 74k w/check engine light on).
i mean i am actually willing to pay $90 for a sensor every 3 years, and get climate control add-on, and redesigned HU. what do u think?

My 99 has 2 O2 sensors.

if 98 just make sure it had the Alternator changed per the recall.

enjoy the ride.

I still say 98 but if you want climate control then your gonna have to get a 99 but climate control isn't all that great, i put it on 77 and it gets too hot and then i put it on 74 and i's still too hot and then i put in on 68 then i wait a bit and it get's too cold, It's garbage but all the bulbs blow out like evey 7 months or so, i had to put in LED's.

Plus the heated seats in the 99SE-L is garbage unless you have remote start which in return disables your anti-theft thing with the chip in the key that you put in the car to enable the electrical system that comes in all 99SE-L.

The Car is great but if you really want a really good car, go get a Volkswagon lol, You can still come and hang out with the Brooklyn Crew lol

My next car in a VW Jetta Turbo.

But 98 is better even more so if it has the same amount of miles as a 99!!!!!!!

98 and 99s have the same auto climate control. 99s have the chipped key security system that the 98 does not. Differences between the two are mostly in the engine. Cali spec 99s have 4 O2 sensors in the Y pipe, therefore adding an aftermarket Y won't be as great a benefit as in 98 or earlier cars.

I love 99s because of the Red SE-L, but other than that, not much different than a 98.

One last thing: 98 and 99s both have the digital odo with 2 trip meters.

i'm glad i read this now, because i was stuck on getting a 99 se, but now i don't know, i thought that the 98 was slower, but i guess i'm wrong. it also seems that 99's are harder to come accross, but anyways, i'm gonna have to read up, cause i don't know which one i should get still. let me know what you think, or try and sell me one or the other. thanks
