What is a good paint job how many coats of what. Thanks

 

After a good prep, which matters the most, it's 2 coats base and 2 coats clear for a deep finish. Depending on how flat the guy can lay clear, you may need to wet sand and buff for a mirror flat finish. That gets expensive, but produces ubelieveable results.

There are some new clears on the market that are awsome. Talk to the body shop and have them recommend which one they like. Pay a little more for better clear.

 

yup don't be cheap with ur paint job.... b/c u will get what u paid for....

 

I can do painting at my shop in PA cost for whole car ranges from 2-3k. I generally do 2-3 coats base depending on color and 2 coats of clear unless customer wants more.

Its going good and should be done in the next month or so. I spun a rod bearing in the DET and had to fix that. It was running great before it spun I was running 11psi ang it felt great.

 

Stupid question. Would it be a bad idea to spray clear coat on existing paint, would it give the paint a nice deeper look.. or is that just a bad idea?

 

Yeah you get what you pay for, dont be cheap with paint because it will cost you more in the end, expect to pay 2-3k depending on how much body work will be needed. when I got my car repainted I think they did 2 base, 2 pearl and 3 clear.

 

If your going to go through the work to repaint you might as well spray a new base coat to cause youll need to prep it the same either way.

 

That all depends on how your shop works. Some shops spray 1 coat of base and 1 clear. Looks pretty good. Most do 2 and 2 or 3 and 2 which will look better. My car has 6 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear. A friend of mine is having his done with 4 coats of primer, 4 coats of base, 3 of candy, and then like 5 more coats of clear.

Paint brand doesn't matter so much. All the big names work. It's the prep work and finish work that will make all the difference. A guy can spray 20 coats of the most expensive paint on your car and it will look like crap if he doesn't prep or do the finish work.

 

i juss got mine painted and it was 2 primer, 5 base, and 8 clear. I agree that the prep and final work is most important

 

i had to learn the hard way, i had 5 cars painted and now understand that less is better. here are 3 cars just to give an idea:

RX7 red/ the whole car taken down to metal.

2 primer
2 primer sealer
5 base
8 clear

LIN LSC / bmw blue with more pearl

1 primer
1 primer sealer
7 base
7 clear

maxima last car painted / oem rosewood with more pearl

1 primer
3 base
3 cear

i have found out that the less coasts you have the less chips you get, and they won't be as deep.

the less clear you have the better because it won't start to crack as fast.

all my cars have been taken to top painter and i have paid alot of money.

the max that i have now has the least of coast and i still had to pay almost $5000 for the job.

not only is the prep thats important but the way you lay the paint and clear. you must pray wet up to the point that you think the paint will run, same with the clear. not to many ppl know how to do this but those that do want to get paid $$$$.

most ppl paint with orange peel ( to much air being used when painting) and give you 10 thin coasts and then they went-sand most of it off. you should alway ask to see the car before it is wet sanded. i alway see my car after every part (primer then base, then the clear). most painters don't like this but then you tell them your paying top money and if you see something wrong that they don't see you will saving them time & money.
