Auto Trans, slam

So I bought a 98 SE in auto for the everyday driver.

Since I feel the need to have power when coming out of a corner, I shift from auto to 2nd gear, the transmission then slams into 2nd gear....

Think there is a problem or it can't handle the shift?

Any recommendations or changing to a synthetic trans fluid ?

Thanks for your help!

Oh ... and if you wanted a daily driver ... but wanted to drive your car like a 5 speed, you should have gotten a 5 speed.

Well, I happen to own another car with a 6speed that blows the doors off any 5 speed Maxima its seen.

No the Maxima is not a racecar, just an everyday beater!

It's amazing to me how sometimes people ask for help while in the same breath spout insults to the people he's asking help from.

First off, the post from the moderator is correct. You wanna drive like a 5spd, get a 5spd. Don't try and drive an auto like a 5spd and expect it to last more than a few months. You wonder why your tranny "slams" into gear when you downshift from D to 2nd in the apex.... It's kinda obvious don't you think????

I'd advice you since you are new to look around and search before you start spouting and beating on your chest about how fast your "6spd" mystery car is. There are some very very fast max's in here that will humiliate a lot of cars that people think are faster.

If you want help, don't stand on the side of the road throwing rocks at cars when YOU have a flat tire.

Hey *******, if you look closely, Mr. "I want to race you from Texas" does not put any helping info out other than, "you should have bought a 5speed." I had to say something!

Come on!

Im not looking for a love relationship, just some guidance on my car.

Man... seriously... do you honestly think I would come out there to race you?... You ask us for help, but you are more interested in bragging/insulting us about our cars.. gg... if you want some useful info... you've had plenty in this thread.. an auto is an auto, not a 5 spd, let the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION do its job. It's not a 5 spd. just leave it in D, and use the gas pedal.. it's not too hard

If you want more guidance, clicky that little green search button in the top right of your screen, you'd be amazed at what kind of things pop out into your screen when you search...

Haha. You'd think a "Porsche dealer" wouldn't even take the time or effort to even care about a maxima, much less register and then post a nOobie question.

And then want to buy an used lip?
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=175853

Then want an used muffler?
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....69#post1654069

Then a CHEAP Y pipe idea?
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=115750

I could go on

There is nothing more to say. You have an auto not a 5spd. You are trying to get blood out of a turnip. It is not a 5spd. If you treat it like one, you will have problems. It slams because it wasn't designed to be driven like you are driving it.

How much more clearer do we need to be?

You really should not be confrontational when you are asking for help. That's also the advice you were given. It's up to you what you do with the given info.

Even though anyone who talks ill about maxima's is no friend of mine, i have to say i auto-shift my auto like its a 5 speed almost every time i drive my car. I've had the car since 80K miles and i believe its still on the oem stock auto tranny. I've had absolutely no problems with it yet. I think the auto tranny is alot stronger than people give it credit. And thats why i'm getting a 5 speed as soon as possible

well i blew my tranny once already, and I used to manually shift... so I'm not taking chances, ESPECIALLY, since i'm boosted, lord knows what would happen if i went from D down to 2...

I think the only reason to shift is to avoid letting the computer do it. I only do this when entering the highway. I don't even shift at the track because its not worth it.

Guys, really there's no really good reason to drive an auto like a 5spd. If you do, eventually, it will tear the tranny up. It's not designed to do that, especially downshift manually like that. It may be a while before you see the effects, but will eventually be there.

Tony, I don't know what tranny you have but the stock auto tranny is very weak compared to many others. It does not stand up to much abuse. If you have heavy power adders, be prepared to dish out money to beef up the auto. Even that does not guarantee anything. Trust me. I know from first hand experience. This year alone I have spent over $4k in the tranny, and I still don't trust it. The 5spd is much easier to be made to hold up to higher HP levels. The stocker is designed for regular driving and it does last a long time if used that way. You start playing around and driving like some people in this thread have suggested, you WILL have problems eventually.

As deezo said, it's ok to do the manual shift every once in a while to maybe stretch out the shifts or even save from the tranny shifting up and down a ton in traffic, but to do it because you are trying to act like you have a 5spd is really unnecesesary (sp) and really foolish IMO. It has been proven time and time again that an auto is an auto. If you want it to be fast, then add HP, not manually shift the auto tranny. The tranny ecu will shift at redline if you want it to. You wanna leave the car in 2nd because you're auto crossing, fine. You wanna manually shift it in bumper to bumper to keep the tranny from up and down shifting a ton, fine. You wanna drive your car like a 5spd because your butt dyno says that makes it "faster", that's silly.

I bet noone has thought about the fact that manually shifting the tranny will most of the time add a ton of excess heat into the mix. How many of you guys that swear by manually shifting have tranny coolers????? Do you know that when you downshift into a lower gear at speed the entire drivetrain, not just the tranny, takes a big strain due to acting as both drivetrain AND brakes at the same time???

What a bunch of jerks! He asks about the "slamming into 2nd" and all that you guys can say is "stop driving it like a 5spd?" No one cares to list any possible causes??? Sweet, typical Maxima elitest attitudes.

AS far as the tranny cooler comment, the car comes with a tranny cooler stock, not a great one, but it's there. So EVERYONE who drives their auto like a 5 spd ahs a tranny cooler to respond to that comment.

Also, as far as reasons to shift manually, the ECU is very slow about down shifting when it finally decides to. Hitting 2nd manualy before a turn WILL most times make you quicker through that turn. Obviously this depends on many things such as the speed that you're carrying into and through the ture, the angle of entry, etc...

Another good reason... downshifting to help slow the vehicle in incliment weather.

Guys, let's maybe think about trying to help a guys here, not the usual "get a 5 spd" "our cars are the fastest out there" crap.

No wonder we have such a bad name on other boards where they actually help people.

we have a bad name on other boards because:

-we have self selected volunteers that go forth and start **** on other boards and claim themselves to be a representitive of the org

-we have guys who come on here to bash maximas

-we have guys who own maximas that bash maximas

-most of the guys on here are nice, but have a real ugly side too.
