top speed

ok wuts the fastest u have taken ur maxima up to? at track or on open road?oh and BTW im not talkin 1/4 speed either jus over all top speed. my first max i got up to about 120mph, my new one barely hits 105mph....horrible suspension i wont take it any faster till thats fixed. i believe with lil mod work our cars are possible capable of at least 140..maybe? including some nitrous.

Well, the last time I did a top speed run, I was somewhere near 130, the needle was pointing at the bottom corner or the right side trip odometer. Scared the **** outta me though, I need to get my shocks replaced badly. The car tends to feel like its loosing stability when you go over bumps at that speed. I bet ya that with some work, these cars can muster 150 easy.

Re: Re: top speed

well at least u have some wut of a suspension, mine feels like a ocean liner at 70mph taking a turn at 20+ is ruled out cause the whole front corner literally raises up into the turn. lol
here is a question where could u go to test ur top speed? a track? or buy a after market speedometer?

I had mine at about 100, but then she started "floating" I had my suspension selector set on neutral instead of firm, so I may would got her faster than that. Sarin, I don't think you made it to 130 without losing something in your car, maybe your lunch, but something had to give, being an 86. So what was it?

A puff of white smoke from the exhuast when I let off the gas, new front brake pads/rotors (they were low to begin with, and I wore them down to metal on metal to avoid a state trooper), and tranny (which was on its way out anyway, it had been making bearing noise for a while). I've gotten to 110 with the new 3rd gen tranny, but with the current shocks I had, I'm too scared to take it faster.

I think the autos are limited to 127mph max. The autos won't shift into 4th gear @ WOT so you can only go fast in 3rd gear. I blew my engine by holding at 6300rpm+ with the speedo pegged. A 5spd should be able to hit 120-125 easy.

That's one thing I hate about auto's with overdrive. My truck did that too when I was farting around, and all overdrive is is the torque converter locking up, it really isn't a gear. Now excuse me while I step out to my car to pet the tranny.

Yeah I pegged 110 it seems the governor slows the cars acceleration down around that speed

I just took my '88 for a top speed run a few months ago. I had it pegged at 125 mph then the governor kicked in. I had so much straight away ahead of me, that with the poor aerodynamics of the car I was able to slow it down to the speed limit without using the brakes.

I just replaced my struts with KYB's over the summer and the car seemed to handle pretty well, no front end lift and the car didn't seem to shimmy or slide, although there was a **** load of wind noise and rattles. This car was definitely not designed to drive on the Autobahn. My old BMW 328 would drive nice and smooth at that speed, like the Maxima does around 85-95. Nevertheless, my Maxima is still a better car in terms of reliability and could keep pace with the BMW in terms of acceleration.

Re: top speed

I pushed my wagon to 120 once, during a medical emergency...

I was at work, when my wife called, having a severe asthma attack...she called me, and I had a virtually straight shot all the way home on I-85, when I lived in NC.

One of my most top speeds happened a month ago. I was on the highway coming from college. Suddenly a sweet gorgeous girl pulled up to me on the next lane on the highway. She actually revved at me in her dropped lightly modified '92 Honda Accord. We were at 60mph at that time, then she blazed off. So I'm like 'she wants to speed to proove a point or she just wants some'. So I slammed on the pedal and zoom! My ride was roaring like a mu'f*cka! In a few seconds I past her like no other. I past her so fast that it felt like she was a parked car! For real ya'll. I assumed she was at about 85-90 and I reached her to her car at about 115mph and my ride was still spittin' power, but since I past her a couple hundred feet and was reaching to 45Speed Limit zone near town I dropped the speed to 50. It was amazing cause all you see on the highway is 2 imports, which happened to be rivals, speeding and zipping past cars side to side. Of course I took the victory! Then later that day at night I met up with the same girl in the streets and that lead into some other story, let's just say I got my award!

Peace

I've had my 85 SE (5spd) up to 132 so far. Not too much done to it yet, The exhaust is ripped off after the cat (well its still there, just not connected, makes it loud as **** =( ), a custom CAI, and Eiback springs to lower it .75". Still trying to find more parts for it, but not too much luck yet. =(.

I forgot........I was driving through Montana at about the same speed as mentioned before, and I lost my crankshaft pulley! Damn thing shot out from underneath my car like a rocket! One of the drive belts broke, causing the other belts to tighen on the main pulley. The bolt just snapped. If I lower the car, get a high performance exhaust system and a CAI, I pretty sure the Maxima could reach about 150-160 mph. They already have 190 hp in stock form.

Actually, the 85-88 Max's only peak at about 150 - 160 hp stock, at the flywheel. The 190hp engine was the VQ30DE, introduced in the 92 SE.

Actually the VQ engine was introduced with the introduction of the 4th gen Minima.

The 3rd gen '92-94 SE's had the VE30DE engine. It does put out 190 horsepower like the VQ. However, the VQ engine is lighter than the VE and there are some other minor enhancements over the VE-series.
