I have Chinese roots. My family is from Hong Kong, although I don't look even a little Chinese. 6'1, 195 pounds, curly hair, lol. But believe it or not I am a 1/4 Chinese. Believe me it looks funny when I stand next to my 4'5 completely Chinese Grandmother (or Por-Por)

That's interesting, I've gone out with 3 Russian women and always thought they were European. 2 were from Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and the other was from Moscow. Guess I always had a Spy who loved me fantasy.... I thought the western part was definitely Europe since it borders Norway and Finland. But I guess it also has a border with China.

well, alot of asian people take offense to being called "oriental" as it describes an item or object, not a person. that being said, i am Vietnamese with a bit of Chinese in me. i hate being called an "oriental" because "oriental" is a type of food or rug.

Calling a person "oriental" will offend the politically correct police. However, I don't think anyone would take offense at the region being called the Orient. When I was growing up, everyone used the term oriental to refer to asians. No one used the term in a derrogatory sense. Now people get offended when it is used when those using it do not intend nor know that it is offensive. Kind of like Star Trek fans being offended when called "Trekkies" as opposed to "Trekkers." There are many around who also do not like the terms white, black, etc.

Re: Russians. The few I've met think of themselves as Eastern Europeans.

Re: Indians. My indian friends seem not to like to be included in the term "asians" even though they know it is part of the Asian continent.

Sometimes, you can't win... there is always someone who will take offense.
