Please educate me about brakes

Hi,

My car isn't stopping as well as it used to. I have to apply more pressure on the brake pedal to stop. I got my pads replaced around 20K.

What role do pads, shoes, calipers, rotors, etc.. play in all of this. If I want to stop better, is it just a matter of replacing the pads? And how often do I need to do this. I've got 38K miles now. Thanks for your help.

Matt

Your new pads are probably a different compound and it will take a little mileage for them to seat ... Replace when you hear grinding

Your pads are really what stops you. What brand of pads are in there now? Nissan pads are actually pretty good as long as it's not the key value brand. A few good pads to consider would be Metal Masters, Porterfield and Performance Friction.

If you have brake judder, have your rotors resurfaced, otherwise leave them alone.
