How is Diamond compared to JL Audio?

I never heard of Diamond Audio until I got on this board. How is this brand compared to JL Audio? Is this new sub REALLY the eqivilent of a W7?

How about the prices, where do Diamonds fall in with the JL prices for all the equipment?

Please shed some light on this for me...objectively

Compared to JL? In my opinion and that of many others there is no comparison.

The TDX has been around for just about a year now.....I would take it over a W7 any day of the week.

Pricing is close to the same at a retail standpoint, if not DA is slightly higher in some cases. The prices that I sell are well bellow those though.

I do sell both DA as well as JL so I am not Biased towards either, just stating my opinions. I had JL amps and removed them for the simple fact I wasnt happy with them. The highs they make available just are not to my taste at all.

Wow, take over a W7? I just sent you an e-mail. I forgot to mention that I've got a 500/1 amp. Curious to see what Diamond has that would work with that.

I replied to your email, also will post here. They only make speakers and amps, no prefab enclosures.

Just to clarify I had nothing against the 500/1 or the 250/1,1000/1 for that matter. In fact I did really like them. It was my 300/2 that I wasnt to happy with. Both got replaced by Phoenix Gold Titaniums.

Don, do you have some more info on the TDX subs? I am looking for info about recommended enclosure volumes, etc. I could not find any of that on their website.

Thanks.

Corey,

I was just going to ask you if you had more definite plans on your enclosure. I have been waiting for T.S. parameters for the TDX for several months. Maybe if we email them they will get the hint?

James,

I sent them an e-mail last night. If I get a response, I will post it here for you. The only thing I found on the website was just a bunch of pictures and a single page PDF file on the build/design of the sub. Nothing more than that. Usually, DA is pretty good about returning e-mails, so we will see. If you get anything before I do, please post it here as well.

As far as my enclosure goes, I am still trying to decide which subs I want. I was going to go the new M6 route and transplant the current MacDaddy subs I have into the Cobra. But, I have been wanting the TDX subs since I first saw them on Diamond's site. I didn't know how much they were going to run, but since Don said that they would be $400 or so, then that pretty much makes up my mind for me. I was seriously considering the Brahma route, but I have never heard a Brahma. So, I would rather stick with what I know or what I am familiar with.

The ideal enclosure for me would be with 2 12 inch TDX subs. I refuse to have a box bigger than 3 cubic feet. I would prefer closer to 2 or 2.2. That is sealed, not ported. I don't know how reasonable that is, but as soon as I get a response from Diamond, I will know which way I will go and how I will deisgn the enclosure. The sub is 9.2 inches deep, so I know that I will have to be careful when designing the enclosure. I would need at least 12.5 - 13 inches of depth in both to make sure the woofer stays cool and operates properly.

It's Carey or C.D., by the way. No biggie.

Thanks,

C.D.

Carey,

Oh, sorry about the 'o'. I won't even pretend that it could have been a typo . I just want the numbers to play with the enclosure possibilities. I am prety sure of which sub I will use in my car next. May even be able to let you hear it in a month or so. I am waiting on a couple corner clamps now so that I can get the 90 degree corners as close to perfect as possible. Then I have to get my new capacitor and amps hooked up. Oh yeah, and those kicks. They should be in by the time everything else is installed.

As always, I won't post anything new in the sig until it is installed and working.

Are you still planning on ditching the DA 8s in the doors? IF so, I may take them off your hands.

Yep. They won't tonally match the other speakers. Kevin mentioned wanting to listen to them also. As he will very soon have HEX kicks installed. I have to cut 5 circles and two round cornered squares this evening so that I can get further along on my kicks and the sealed "test" enclosure for my soon to come new sub. Have to build something for the mid and tweet to mount to so that anyone can hear the HEX 8's.

Ahh $hhiet!

Are you telling me that I got the two of you backasswards again? There has got to be a way for me to remember who's sig is which. I guess I have actually talked or emailed with both of you about this sub, enclosures, or something. I guess I didn't even know C-Dawg's real name before. I really need to start reading the full sig's before posting misdirected responses.

I haven't talked to him about a TDX enclosure, I have spoken with James in the past about M6 enclosures and Brahma enclosures. So, maybe it was you he was referring to, and I was just the ******** who answered it.

James,

Just remember me as C.D. It will simplify things.

On to brighter things, ask and you shall receive. Diamond Audio sent me the spec sheet for the TDX series of subs. It is in a PDF file and is rather large. If you would like me to ZIP it and e-mail it to you, drop me a line
here and I will send it to you tonight. It is about 620 KB.

Thanks,

C.D.

I plugged it in and got what I expected. It is optimized for a ported enclosure. Don't get me wrong, it may sound awesome sealed. But it will take massive amounts of linear excursion to do it. Sorry, almost forgot winisd gives cone excursion as two way motion. So I can allow for 48mm of excursion. So it will work sealed, just has to move a whole lot to do it. But pretty much all subs are like that. But ported tuned to about 33 Hz or less looks awesome on the graph. Delay does become a problem like all ported systems, as well as port noise with anything with Xmax > 20 mm.

I was really impressed by the specs on the tech sheet, but I have yet to input everything into windisd.

Don, what do you think the advantages of switching from 2 M6 12s to a single 12 inch TDX might be? I am trying to determine if I am up for this.

Um, I'm not Don. But the math is simple. Multiply Xmax by Sd for total linear displacement volume of each system. If you are using 2 or more of a driver, multiply the result by the number of drivers.

James,

Have you decided what you are going to do yet? Sealed or ported? Multiple drivers? Tuning frequency?

Well, I don't know for sure but I have a good idea. I am going to try a single 15 in a sealed box first. After listening to it long enough to break it in I will decide If I want it to run lower or if it needs more lower midbass impact in the 40-70 hz range. Depending on the sound I will start making the enclosure for two fifteens, if I can mod the trunk enough to mount them.

p.s. What I plan to use has an Xmax of 34mm. I have a sealed box near the halfway point. Just need to quit being lazy and cut some more wood and start glassing.

I agree. Although Ihave actually heard them back to back running off of a DA 1200.1. The 2 12s def put out a bit more than the single 12, but technically you are moving more airspace correct? The single TDX was definately alot more responsive, and gave a much cleaner SPL.

In summary are you looking for SPL, SQ, both or just wanna save trunk space?

You see, that's the thing. I ditched my MacDaddys for the M6 subs and I love them. I have yet to hear a TDX sub, but I have thought a lot about gaining some trunk space back and things like that. I have just wondered if 1 sub would be enough for me. I have always had 2 - 4 subs.

My preference is SQ. If I can fit 2 subs in 2 - 2.2 cubic feet, that's the ticket.

You could always try a 15. There are a few that will work well in boxes that small.

According to the PDF it would work. It just would not be an SQ install.
