How to reduce wheel-hop?
How to reduce wheel-hop?
It's rather annoying when I need to make a quick move like entering highways with my Max and the annoying @$$ wheelhop kicks in making me ease off of the gas...do all you stock 5spds get wheel hop thru approx 4.5k rpm and up even when you don't stomp the gas?
Will lowering the front tire pressures to about 29psi do any good or I just have to deal with this -ve of fwd
btw will running wider tires later on make any difference?

I don't know the answer to your question, but why is there a traffic cone in your front seat??

anyway, lower pressure will help. wider tires not really unless they are heavier than what you have now.

Worn struts can also aggravate wheel hop by not keeping the springs adequately in check. Are yours tired, maybe?

I sure hope not...car was acquired about a month ago with 54k miles or so...about to hit 60k in a few..isn't that premature for Struts?

Just a possibility worth looking into. Try the bounce-test (search if u don't know what it is)
I noticed a significant reduction in wheel hop at 75k mi, after installing my KYB AGX's.
i get the same problem with my '95 SE 5spd, i've lowered my tire pressure to 28 psi, the front tires are still new, pirelli p4000 super touring, good tread, still happens though, oh yeah, my car is now at 140k miles.
any other cures?

The poly-filled mounts are the only option, aside from making sure your struts aren't worn. Personally I don't think tire choice has much to do with it, but pressure may play a role.
Don't think I'd cost myself the premature tire wear or poor fuel economy caused by running too low a pressure, but that's just me.
The only things you can do to reduce wheel hop is to get polyeurethane bushings and transmission mounts (I've heard this makes your car a bit noisier) and better struts and springs. getting better tires will actually probably make your wheel hop even worse. this is because wheel hop is actually caused when you have too much traction. because you have too much traction and not enough weight on the wheel it lifts off of the ground. this may not seem to make sense, but think about it, when the road is wet you have a lot less traction and your tire probably just spins and doesn't hop (as much). I haven't changed my mounts or bushings on my car, but with my H&R's and KYB's my wheel hop is much less than before.
