Is this true? At highway speeds use overdrive gear to conserve fuel.

With the cost of fuel going up many of us are concerned about spending too much money by buying Premium gas. But we know that our cars require it. I came across an article in the paper about Nine ways to conserve gas and the statment below was one of the nine steps. Can we drive our cars with the Overdrive turned on?

"Go for cruise control. "Plan a route that lets you travel at constant speed and bypass congested areas," AAA spokesman Mantill Williams said. That means avoiding those two-lane roads rife with stoplights. If you have an automatic transmission, use an overdrive gear at cruising speeds, said Jim Kliesch, a research associate at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy."

You don't drive your car with the overdrive on? Assuming you have an automatic, that is.

When the Overdrive light is on, does this mean this mean you are running your car in Overdrive mode?

5th gear is overdrive for manuals. 4th gear is overdrive for Autos. No need to mess with it.

Look closely at the light the next time you're in your car. When it is lit up it says "O/D off", meaning that the transmission is allowed to shift into overdrive when the light is out, and it inhibits shifting into overdrive when the light is on.

Yes.......drive with overdrive on.....turns WAY less RPMS and that is what = better gas mileage, because it is a taller gear.

Your sig pic disturbs me. I'm not sure if it's the coffee cup or the clunky looking glasses that bother me. Maybe it's both.

No, it's the exact opposite of what you stated. I just came back from going outside..Brrrrr...cold! When your light is on, the overdrive is off. I suggest you keep the overdrive on to conserve on gas unless your going up hill. Hope this helps! ~Frank

I would turn off O/D on-ramp and/or doing below 45 miles per. Otherwise, it should always be ON. My $0.02

Why is there a difference above 60?

I had thought that over drive 'off' just disengaged 4th gear, and kept you up to 3rd.

However, when I'm on the highway going 65 or over, I can turn over drive off (it will shift to third) give it some gas (enough so that if overdrive was on it would shift into third) then press the button back in so that overdrive is back on, it will stay in third, but the RPM's will jump up about 400 making the car pull much harder than it did with overdrive off.

So why is there a difference between 3rd gear over drive off (going 65 sitting at about 3400rpm's), then engaging overdrive back on, third gear (going 65 sitting at 3800rpm's?)
