which went bad first the Starter or the Battery?

it's like the which came first the chicken or the egg. My car wasn't starting yesterday. The symptoms were as such, the car had a hard time turning over. The start was really sluggish. No clicking sound like when the battery is dead. So called my mechanic and told him to get a starter and I'd meet him in an hour. After the starter went in, I got the click click sound of a dead battery. The was no water in the battery. So I went out and got a new battery. Car starts like a charm. I guess I could have jumped the car first and that would have told me it was the battery. I just figured it was the starter cause of all the starter probs the 4th gen has. I was a little upset cause I could have saved the money, but later I figured my car has 193,000 miles on it so a new starter was worth it. any thoughts???? I guess my advice is don't assume it's the starter, check the battery too.

It probably was just the battery. The starter was still good.

did you save the original starter? i'm guessing not, because most starters have core charges on them, and you prolly handed the old one in, if not, you have an extra one if this one ever goes bad.
