I have 95 SE 5 sp with 67,000 miles on it which I've had for three years. Lately I've noticed a fairly loud noise imediately after cold startup which sounds like the engine valves chattering. I'm not sure if this is just from the very cold weather we've been experiencing making the oil thicker and delaying valve lubrication or if the valves need adjustment. The manual recommeds valve clearance inspection if valve noise increases. Does anyone have experience with this, if so how much did the inspection/adjustment cost?

Also, can anyone recommend a shop manual for this car?

Thanks in advance

Does this valve clatter last only ten seconds? If so, it may be caused by a leaky anti-drainback valve in the oil filter. This allows the oil to flow "backwards" through the filter and back into the sump. Then, when the engine starts, it takes a few seconds for the oil pump to refill those empty galleries. During that time the valve mechanism clatters. Replace your oil filter. Try a different brand this time.

For most home mechanics the Haynes repair manual is the best choice. For a detailed comparison of 4th Generation Maxima manuals, see http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/manualcompare.html

Nissan does not include valve clearance adjustment with any scheduled maintenance. It should be done if and when the valves become noisy. On most cars this service will never be needed.

Adjusting valve clearance not as simple as turning an adjustment screw. Each cam lobe bears directly against a disk-shaped steel shim of precisely machined dimensions. Changing valve clearance is done by removing the shim and substituting another with a different thickness. The shims are made in a variety of thicknesses. They can be purchased from the dealer. I'm not aware of any other source for these shims.
