What year did the Maxima change gas requirements
What year did the Maxima change gas requirements
I had a 95 SE and I know that premium gas was required. In my 2001 SE, I've noticed that premium is recommended but not required.
Which year was the first year of this change?
Is the 2004 Max gonna follow the same recommendation as my 2001?
(Please don't turn this into another one of those "Premium vs. Regular" debates
)

Again, does anyone have the answer?
It's all just a word game that the marketers play.
The VQ engines LIKE premium fuel BEST.
But if the marketers say premium fuel is "required" it will scare people away from buying the Maxima, because a lot of people just don't want to pay extra.
If they say it's just "recommended" but not "required" then it won't scare those people away. You can run the VQ engines on regular fuel, but at reduced performance levels. It's fine as long as you're just cruising and not getting on it. But if you're on the throttle hard it won't run at its full potential.
So whether they say "recommended" or "required" it doesn't matter either way. The VQ needs premium fuel to run the best and makes its rated power on premium fuel. You can still run regular, but at reduced performance, and depending on how you drive, your fuel mileage may also drop to the point where you might as well have just put premium in to begin with.

It matters when it comes to knocking out sensors. You run 87 octane in an 01 Max, and you give up a few horses. You run 87 in a 96 Max, and your vehicle goes back to the dealer for service(just ask my bro-n-law

If you want to run regular, buy a different car. The Accord and Camry V6 engines are both specify that only 87 octane fuel is "required"
LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN SINCE IT HAS GONE ASTRAY:

Take a look at the fuel door and see what it says.
On MY 95 I know on the fuel door, it says "Premium fuel recommended for maximum performance." I'm pretty sure it said that in the manual.
If you want your knock sensor to retard your timing and decrease the performance of your maxima, by all means, don't use premium. Sweet mother of all that is maxima, why does this keep coming up?
