92 SE Needs new clutch.........
92 SE Needs new clutch.........
Hey there fella's! OKay you might remember me, my GF has a 92 SE that ran like crap, till I found this board, with your help I have learned all about the 3.0l, fixed her coil packs, disabled the VTC's etc etc........
Now it has come time for a new clutch. Now I am a mechanic in my spare time so I am fully capable of doing her clutch, BUT this will be my first FWD clutch.
Now having not read through the Haynes manual yet I am just wondering if you guys have any tips for me, pull the engine, pull the tranny, that sort of stuff.
What brand clutch should I use? Who sells it? Do the hydraulics need to be replaced too??? Special tools???
Anything you can help with is much appriciated.
Oh and I did do a search but only found threads relating to clutch upgrades and other generations.
Here's the details:
1992 SE
216K miles (woo hoo!!)
RUNS STRONG even with VTC's disabled
5 speed (obviously)
Thanks in advance for your help, you have come through for me in the past, I am semi-new to the Nissan stuff, but I build custom Ford trucks in my spare time so I am no stranger to pulling tranny's, etc.........

Basically it depends on your plans for the car most go with ACT clutch kits, while some would prefer OEM (not key value) clutch kits. In addition to the kit replace both transmission oil seals and be sure to get a GL4 spec tranny fluid. Redline MT90 and AMSOIL are popular manual tranny fluid with good performance.

I love a hardcore racing style so the 6 puck solid hub clutch kit from ACT was ideal for me but I would recommend the ACT street Disc with heavy duty pressure plate and the throw out bearing they use is great it is made by NTK same company as NGK that makes our sparks plugs and a really good throw out, also repace the pilot bearing and if you have the money get the AASCO 11lbs flywheel. Call Stillen up and ask for Dean and get him to work with you on the price. Just had a guy get a Flywheel from them for just under $400.

...i think he's EXT. 182 when and if u call stillen. He also got me the Type II wings (which still needs to be painted and installed, so if anyone knows a good place to get that done in the LI, NY area that would be cool) for $175 opposed to $250. So Dean's a good guy!

AASCO Flywheel and ACT clutch $710.00 shipped
GF is going to drive it correct? Then I HIGHLY recommend just using the NISSAN OEM clutch(NOT THE CRAP KEY VALUE KITS!!!). The ACT street clutch is too stiff for everyday driving for a girl(unless she's buff and is a serious car nut). I have this and the pedal pressure is not THAT stiff but it was NOTICABLY harder to push down.
Given that the oem clutch will handle just fine for 95% of the driving and will hold even w/ a pretty modded maxima, it's the right choice.

I personally have an ACT and with a new (OEM spec) flywheel and love it. As Jeff said the pedal is a bit stiffer but its not too bad. I'd also like to add that you might as well get a rear main seal, input shaft seal, and if any of the tranny mounts are bad you may as well replace them too. I did my own clutch at work and it took me about 4 hours and its actually one of the easiest front drive trannys to drop since there isn't any crossmember in your way. I didn't use any manual or nothing its a pretty straight forward job. Oh yeah, since you have to pull the axles you may as well replace the seals too. Very easy while the trannys out.
