Auto Shifter is Locked

My shifter is locked, and will not let me push the button in all the way to let me shift out of park. I was out in a parking lot, and took the plastic trim around the shifter off, and was able to feel what happens when the button is pushed. I was able to push a piece, I belive connected to the bar that would enable the bar to go forward, and the locking mechinism to deactivate. I was able to put it in drive, and get it back in the driveway.

Key release? I cant figure out what that is, if it was a mod. I can insert the key, start the car, turn off the car and pull out the key fine.

As for spills I did spill a coke at Wendys a couple of days ago...very embarasing story, ...I bet they are still laughing there.

actually, i'm having a problem like this too. My shifter isn't locked, but it's sluggish, and there's more resistance on it than there was before. Nothing was spilled on it.....hell, the only one that's allowed to drink in the car is me, and i only drink something with a cap on it. But anyway, it just got bitterly cold here again in the NE, so i'm atttributing it to the cold for now.

Re: Auto Shifter is Locked

Turn your steering wheel left and right while trying to press the button. Turn hard one way. If that doesn't work, try the other way.

Streatreaper..no click. Tried turning the wheel, nothing. I would imagine that it does possibly have something to do with the spring...because I am able to reach in and assist the mechanism that it is to keep it locked, by moving it slightly forward, which relases the locking mechanism.

The click that your suppose to hear when you push in the brake (while in park) is what allows you to take your car out of park. That is why some theft deterent sytems simply keep you from pushing in the brake because your car will not come out of park and thus prevent anyone from taking it.

The problem your having could be this mechanism if you do not hear it disengage with the usual click when you press the brake in while in park. I am no expert on this but others have had this problem, you might search or start a new thread that specify's this. Good luck with the car, do you have a Hanes manual?

I've been searching like a fiend, and got a very basic idea of what is incorporated in the shifter. I do have the Hanes Manual as well. I also have a remote start, that I am trying to incorporate in the whole scheme of things....it has a kill switch that if the brake is surpressed, or trunk/hood is poped, engine is shut off. ....as for now though, I am kind of hoping to figure out more about the spring. When I push the button, I can see the mechanism moving, and what it is trying to do, but it just needs a lil more assistance.

Have you been able to manipulate the spring so that you can get it out of park?

If you are not hearing the click when you press in the brake I am pretty sure that mechanism is your problem, I'll do a search as well and see if I can help.

..Thanks a ton, I never found that thread. I'll clean her all up nice. As mentioned before, I did spill a coke in my car, which initially ticked me off...but after cleaning the coke up I thought everything was ok. Maybe some crept down in there. It has not been above zero here for a long time, so those two things in combination probably "gooed" something up.

I can shift !!!! Thats exactly what it was, it was all gunked up. I got in there with some WD-40, and a lil windex, and works like a charm. Thanks everyone for your input. I'm glad it was just a minor thing like that, and not encorporated with any type of faliure to the mechanisms.
