Question for those who tinted windows themselves?
Question for those who tinted windows themselves?
I'm gonna be tinting my windows myself and was wondering what brand is a good one. I've seen a lot of Gila at autozone pep boys and advanced. Anyone know if this is a good make or where to get a good one?
Thanks - Chad

So how come you've decided to do it yourself? I'm telling you man, you can't cheap out on a tint job... get it done professionally w/ lifetime warranty.
Re: Re: Question for those who tinted windows themselves?
I wanna do it myself because it is cheaper and a have a friend who does tints all the time. I did consider having a shop do it...but the least expensive place was like 200 bucks.
i would not recomend doing tints yourself, thats like trying to paint your car yourself. i just got my car tinted on tuesday and it cost $99 for regular and $120 for premium. i saw no difference between the two tints but i got the premium cause it has lifetime warrenty and it came in 5% which is what i have all around, mabey if i feel up to it ill post pics later on. just shop around 200 for tints sounds like a rip off, not even my pops minivan which has like 7 windows didnt cost 200

llumar is good. basically i would recommend tinting a lot of flat glass first (like windows, glass doors) and actually feeling what a ***** tint is to work with. I could do it perfect on a flat panel glass but the car.. well after 3 attempts at my driver window i just took it to a local place. I did put on the windscreen band though.
yep. i've been there before. Thought i could save some money and tried it myself. after peeling the passenger door and trying to apply the new film for about 3 hours I figured I should take it to the shop down the street. don't do it unless you have a lot of time or know someone who does this stuff.
You can probably buy some tint from a tint shop and then do it yourself. It will probably be a better quality than what you can get from Pep Boys or some other store, but it'll be more expensive, too. The better quality tint is easier to work with.
If you are set on doing it yourself, it's not too hard. It just takes time and patience. Measure twice, cut once. Make sure you have a good supply of soapy water and new razor blades, and lots of time.
You may also want to have a friend help you hold the tint for the larger strips. Do the back window in several pieces, it's much easier. You can measure it out and then cut along the defroster lines so the different strips don't show as much.

I just got my tint done the other week. they did a pretty good job. one window had a slight scratch so i took it back and had them redo that window and i watched the guy do it. Here's what he did:
cut a piece of tint to be roughly the same size as the window
spray soapy water all over outside of window
put tint on outside of window with the backing facing away from the car
roll window down an inch or two
cut top of tint just a bit lower than the top edge of the glass window
continue along front slant (he was doing front pass window)
pull top edge of tint away from glass and roll window all the way up
cut bottom of tint 1/4" below bottom edge where glass and door meet
trim the side near the b pillar leaving an extra 1/4" or so that will tuck under the track
take the trimmed tint off of the window
spray a lot more soapy water on outside of window
reapply tint to outside of window
get heat gun and heat tint where you need to gather up the ridges
this is mostly along the bottom where the curve of the window makes the tint create ridges, but you may need to heat top too.
heating only took 10 secs or so, don't over do it
clean inside of window very good using razorblade and scrubbing pad
clean window and spray lots of soapy water on inside of window
roll window down an inch or so
peel backing off tint and place it on window (from the inside)
line up top first
roll window up and use squeegy to tuck it into b pillar track and under the lip on bottom of window
squeegy all the soapy water out
it looked simple enough, but i'm sure it takes a lot of practice to make it look that easy, but that's the basic procedure...i think
