Ugh --help-- I hated to hear this.

Today, I blew a inch sized hole in my catalyic converter. Along with this 4 of my 02 sensors burned out. Dealer quoted me $1,300 to get this mess fixed.

Well, My question is, does anyone know what kind of warranty is on the catalyic converter? I could have sworn it was 50,000+ miles, but the dealer here is saying its 36,000 miles.

Thanks

No way I would spend that kind of money to get that all fixed. I would just buy a new Cat and 02 sensors and install that **** myself. 1,300 is way over-priced. Sorry though, I dont know what kind of warranty is on it.

Whoa what the hell did you do to your car? Unless you caused the problem they have to fix it. Under US law all emissons control equipment (Ex. O2 sensors and Catalytic converters) on cars sold in the US have a manditory warranty of 8 yrs/80,000 miles. I believe it mentions that law in the Nissan car manual.

If you end up fixing it $1300 is way too much, it costs about $80~$120 for each 02 sensor and you can get an aftermarket cat for like $100~$200 depending on the brand. Also before you change these parts make sure what caused the failure is repaired too.

Update:

After going to the dealer and showing them in the owners manual that it is indeed a 80,000 mile warranty, they then proceed to say that due to the way the heat shield on the outside of the cat looked they couldn't replace it. After my own inspection, I see no visible damage. Why do dealers have to be so damn shady?

If the dealer is giving you the run around, go to another one (I must be thinking that they won't do the same thing to you to )but you might have better luck getting them to do the job.

I hate dealerships, They can really be a PITA and want to walk all over you if they think they can get away with it.

You really have two options, Take your car to a different dealership. Then report that other dealership to Nissan North America, and the BBB. 2, you can write the current dealership a letter, outlining the above course of action, and tell them if they don't fix your car immediatly and free of charge, then you are going to mail out the paperwork, and take your business elsewhere. Ask to speak to the general manager, usually works better. BTW, I did this before, and I got what I wanted...

Another option is to find out who the owner of the dealership is and send him or her a certified letter outlining in a polite and professional fashion the problem and the solution you are seeking. It will let him/her know you are a polite person with a business background and will serve to gain their attention promptly.

Because, after you pay the $1300 to fix that crap that IS under warranty, regardless of any "heat shield" problems, the dealer is also going to turn it in under the warranty and get paid twice to do one job. I used to work for a place that did the same thing constantly. I really wonder how those people sleep at night.

This is sad but true. These f***in dealers just want to rip anyone off. Take it to an independent shop and you should'n't pay no more than $300-$400 bucks. Those damn O2 sensors, wtf are they so damn expensive. A piece of wire connected to a piece of plastic.

Okay here is the damage report.

Took it down to Midas and they helped me find this rather large hole. I have a fist sized puncture in my pre-catalyic converter(the cat that bolts to the manifold). Along with the pre-cat I did indeed kill 4 02 sensors.

Unfortunately, the guys at Midas told me, they didn't think they had a part carrier for the converter, and would have to order it from the dealer(that i've been having troubles with). I told them thanks but no thanks.

Now, I've heard that the stillen Y-pipe replaces the pre-cat with straight piping. I'm thinking I would come out better to just order a Y-pipe, and the appriopriate sensors than to order a pre-cat from Nissan.

Any suggestions appreciated,
Tactics

you have lots of choices in y-pipes for less than 1300 dollars. stillen, warpspeed, budget, and cattman. cattman even has headers to go with the y-pipe. make sure you know if your car is fed or cali spec.
