5 speed guys who changed their MTF.. check in...

2 questions..

1. How many quarts were you able to fit into the tranny before it started to leak out?

2. Did you take out the shifter sensor to drain the tranny or used the drain plug?

I took out the shifter sensor and the oil just rushed out quick.. then i let it drip for a while until it stopped.. i found the shifter sensor to be lower than the drain plug.. so it definately gets more oil out.. especially with the car slightly tilted.. but i was able to easily fit in 5 and a half quarts.. and could have probably done a little more.. is this okay? what methods did you use and how much did you fit?

also what kind of difference did you feel after changing the MTF?

thanks

As long as the tranny was level when you filled it, you're fine. If the tranny was tilted at an angle (like with just the front on jackstands) you should start with the car level and open the fill plug again. When fluid stops coming out you're at the correct level. If the tranny is overfilled the fluid can aerate and won't work as well.

thanks,

I'm afraid that I either overfilled it or didn't pour enough.
At first it was tilted downwards in my driveway, which was better for draining it completely. Then I was filling it up, and it started leaking out before I finished my 5th quart. So I closed it up, turned it around with the front raised upwards and started pouring in more, which was the remainder of the 5th quart and a 1/2 of the 6th. it still didn't pour out of the fill hole but i stopped fearing i'd go too far, since my car is titled a bit. if I put my finger into the hole i can feel the fluid level being already close to pouring out, i estimated that if the car was even, it would be just enough..

hopefully all is well
i really should have filled it with the car even, but my driveway is tilted and the street is too crowded with cars and too narrow.

not to scare you, but i thought our tranny's took 4.5 quarts of fluid.

When i had a shop change my MTF, the guy said he could only get about 3.5 quarts in there, probably because he didn't drain all of it out first.

I used the drainplug.

Poured about 1/2 quart of new fluid in (after draining off the old fluid) with the drain plug still open, in order to flush out a little more of the old fluid. (Basically, I poured until I saw the new fluid was draining out, uncontaminated by the old fluid).

If memory serves me, it took 4-5 qts to get even with the threaded horizontal fill opening in the bell housing.

I used Redline MT-90. Shifting may have been marginally better, but not a huge noticeable difference to me. I know it's a quality fluid though & I felt better about the increased protection in there.

As far as noticeable improvements go, keep in mind I'm in a warm climate - you guys who see the temps drop below freezing will definitely notice smoother shifting gearboxes (especially before engine & tranny have warmed up to operating temps) with a synthetic fluid in there.

-My .02 cents-
