Just wondering...my friend of a friend's civic got a turbo on it, they took it to the dyno the next day...and the damn thing shattered...how the hell does that happen??

 

Over-revving, fatigue failure, porosity or impurities in the turbine blades giving rise to stress concentrations, thermally induced creep resulting in a stator rub, ... etc.

It is extremely uncommon, but jet engine turbine blades sometimes fail, taking out the engine and sometimes punching through the engine cowling. Think of that the next time your on an airliner sitting in the plane of rotation of a jet engine.

 

I just learned about the same exact things in my materials engineering class. . hehehe. And with the same jet turbine example too!
