VQ34 in a GT-R

A lot of you have probably seen this or heard about it from someone. I just came accross a google search which led me to a listing of a magazine that talks about Top Secret's VQ34 powered GT-R.

To further read about the topic of a VQ34, those with search capabilities can look up "vq34de" ... "vq34" and "vq34det" got me no results.

You should get a thread from CraigMack with last post by SR20DEN on 9-25-2002 ... a thread by 1MAX2NV with last post by mechanic on 11-12-2001 ... and another one by BSwithTF, last post by Black95Se on 11-06-2001

I'm still not sure whether the Top Secret engine is a VQ34DE, or DET.. but it would make sense to get the Cefiro VQ30DET and displace it to 3.4 since it's rear wheel. Can't imagine a FWD GT-R.. also, do they even have FWD VQ30's in Japan?

umm...ok it's either i've missed some very important information or you guys need to read more, i've seen a lot of posts that say the Cefiro is RWD or AWD, guys, if you ever check out nissan.co.jp you can see that the Cefiro is the same as the Maxima, they all use the A type chasis (A31-A32-A33), and the same VQ engine with minor differences (VI..etc.), infact, the Cefiro is currently one of the only cars in Nissan of Japan's fleet that is not offered in 4WD, because the car is FWD, it was always FWD and unless they make a very special edition (i doubt they would) it will never be anything but FWD, the US Maxima, the Maxima QX in EU and ME and the Cefiro in Japan and Asia are all the same car, they just have a different facelift.

if i'm wrong, then please correct me.

sorry, ranting again.

The engine was probably a VQ35 from one of the FM-platform cars. The Fairlady Z, Skyline, Skyline Coupe, take your pick. The article says the engine is a VQ34, however.

Here's why: The VQ35 has a pretty high compression ratio of something like 10.3:1. Not exactly turbo friendly. What happened is that Top Secret probably used some dished, lower compression pistons. These dished pistons did not take up as much space as the NA models, which brought the displacement down by about a tenth of a liter.

This is common in some production cars, such as Volvos. Ever wonder why the turbo S80 is a 2.8L and the NA model is a 2.9L? The same goes for the S40, which has a 1.8L in turbo form, and a 1.9L in the NA configuration.

Case solved.

As for this:
but it would make sense to get the Cefiro VQ30DET and displace it to 3.4 since it's rear wheel. Can't imagine a FWD GT-R.. also, do they even have FWD VQ30's in Japan?
If they wanted to do what you said, Top Secret could have used the rwd VQ30DET from the Cedric/Gloria twins(JDM version of the Infiniti M45).
Nissan apparently used a VQ30DET in one of their JGTC R34 GT-Rs, just to see how it would work. It was able to make 538hp before failure.
