New turbo, Pistons and rods are in!

Hi guys

I am not very good a picture links and stuff, so bear with me while I try to get it right. I'll be editing a few times

Below are pictures of the new turbo and below those are a picture of my pistons and rods. The pistons need to be modified slightly unfortunately but should be ready soon

On the left (above) is the compressor for the T4/60-1. On the right is the new GT turbo

Below are the two exhaust housings side by side You can see a difference in the fins. The one on the right is the new one. You can see the blades are quite different (like a q-trim wheel)

some more pics:

Above shows the difference in size between the exhaust housings. Left is the T4 right is the GT. The housings are HUGE, but this turbo is not a regular turbo. It's supposed to spin up as fast as a T3 and have none of the lag of larger housings/wheels and it's not a BB turbo! It is also supposed to produce more power throughout the rev range being more efficient ... we'll see exactly how it performs on the dyno!

Below is a pic of my pistons and rods:

It feels like XMAS! Yippee!

Sorry, was a bit busy preparing for Hot Import Nights this past week. I have pictures of it in the IS.

All Garrett GT-series turbos are BB. You sure about that?

Why did you get a divided turbine housing? Are you planning on rerouting your exhaust to take advantage of the "Twin-Scroll" housing with a dedicated cylinder bank per volute?

The housing is Garrett, the internals are custom. Yes I am certain it is not BB. Housing/flange was not on purpose. I didn't want to wait any longer for the correct one.

Do you think you have GT series wheels?

If they are claiming it's a non-BB GT, then they probably used a GT wheel/compressor housing with a Twin-scroll turbine housing and a non-BB center section.

The GT series wheel has far superior efficiency, however the divided turbine Twin-scroll housing only benefits spool up and decreased backpressure, ie top end, by separating the banks of cylinders.

Can't wait to see the dyno plot!

Re: Hmmmn..

Yes I have the GT wheels. I don't know exactly what was done yet. The split housing doesn't have anything to do with separating banks of cylinders. It helps spool the turbo quicker on the bottom end, the penalty is you sacrifice a little on the top end. IF the wheel and bearing housing work as they should, this split should not be necessary. All this has yet to be proven on the dyno so I don't want to hype it up too much yet. If it works, it'll be awesome ... I can't wait!

I'm VERY interested to see how a GT series efficient wheel works with a sleeve type bearing.

Actually, that is the purpose of a divided "Twin-scroll" housing. If you don't separate the banks, you're not going to reap the benefits. When you separate the exhaust pulses into a divided turbine, you get quicker spool up and less backpressure at high rpms, thus a BETTER top end. Best of both worlds, which sounds EXACTLY like what you were claiming they told you. You won't see this with your current setup though.

Good luck! I hope those GT wheels work.

BTW, how much cheaper was this "hybrid" than just getting a GT30+ BB turbo? Hopefully, you will get around to swapping in a true GT-series, because they are supposedly the sheeeeit!

My install is two weeks out, the guy that does the work is moving and needs to get all his stuff sorted out!

Check out the latest edition of turbo magazine, they have an article on the latest Garrett stuff.

What MONTH issue? I get so many magazines, I don't remember which is the latest. I do get Turbo & High-Tech Performance though, but ANYTHING they are referencing is OLD news.

See June edition of Turbo magazine ... you are right it is old news, but useful for those who want to learn about it.

To reap the "full" benefits of a divided turbine housing, doesn't the exhaust manifold(s) need to be tuned accordingly to each exhaust pulses.

No I did not blow my engine. In order to run higher boost you should really lower the compression. I wanted to run higher boost but wanted to keep low end. My current engine is still fine. I am in a dilemma right now as to whether to finish off this project and get the engine installed or start on my other project. ... actually my other project has started but I am not sure if I have enough funds or time for both.

Pistons and rods will typically run around $1800-$2000 since no one has "off-the-shelf" stuff.

In order to make full use of split turbo housing you must match up firing cycles to banks.

Unfortunately, it's going to be a while. I have a lot of sutff to do. I have two projects going. On this one, I am waiting for a custom flange for my new turbo, I am going to install the Quaife cos the Clutch is gone so I may as well take the opportunity to do the diff. Replace the clutch, install my emanage finally here after 3 months of back order and then do injectors. Then I might add NOS and or alcohol injection since I have all the parts. After all that I might consider the engine It sucks not having the time to work on it all. It'll get done eventually. Hope it's done by winter!

what the hell do you do for work? I can't imagine having the money to throw at my car like you do...I would be in heaven Its a shame that mechanical engineers don't make nearly as much as they are supposed to...I am so good at spending money!
