"Gated" auto shift lever - looks or function?

Just wondering since Nissan is choosing to add a "gated" look to the 4-speed auto. tranny shift lever, is that actually functional or is it just for looks?

It's functional if you mean you can shift without pressing a button. I think it's for looks too.

Do any of you w/ the 2k2+ Maxima auto's feel that the 3 to 4 (and v.v.) shift is waaaay too soft.. it takes a feather touch to shift back and forth b/w the two gears.. ****es me off b/c I like to rest my hand on the gear..

I was leary myself about this at first, being used to a column shifter. I really love it now, and hate driving cars w/o it. Its just nice to cruise around below highway speeds in 3rd, and then nudging it right to D for highway use. It also has a firm feel to it, and at least gives some satifaction of shifting "manually".
