I just blew my third transmission.

What is it with these transmissions. Yeah I drive hard sometimes, but no where near hard enough to break 3 transmissions. I am so tired of this. I was moving slowly on a highway last night and down shifted into third gear and felt a slight jerk and heard this loud rattling noise. It sounded like gears grinding. I pull off the highway and find out I only have 4th and 5th gears. I manage to get the car home sputtering at each start because of the high gear. I pull up to my house and all of a sudden 1st and 2nd gears are working. I know third gear is completely blown for sure. What makes matters worse, I just had the transmission rebuilt 17,000 miles ago. The warrantee was good for 12,000 miles. Not worth the $1,400 I spent at all in my opinion. I wonder if I can find an instrument cluster with an odometer reading between 165,200 and 177,200. If any one has one please email me. I'm so frustrated with this car.

For the most part I agree with that. But manual's aren't as big a deal to rebuild as automatics.

I wouldn't bother asking about the clutch. I blew out 4th gear in my '98 with a very weak OEM clutch.

Why does everybody say not to rebuild?

I just had mine rebuilt...nothing was 'broken', but the bearings were starting to go and stuff was starting to get worn. I wanted it 'freshened' up so to speak.

the way i look at it is.. most maxima's don't blow Manual tranny's at 40k so a 40k tranny would be ok for me. It makes me feel better than rebuilding a broken tranny that might break again like the one in this story.

my cousin bought a tranny from car-part.com and we did the install in my garage http://www.sprintmax.com/tranny/

i just feel safer buying a used tranny for $700, than rebuilding a broken one for $1400.. thats just me

Well lemme run this by you real quick. I got a price on a brand new tranny at 1900 plus i need a clutch and thats 180. They said about 350 to install the tranny AND clutch and replace the rear-main seal. Now i put about 25000 miles on my car a year and i have an MEVI on order so im keeping her for a while. Would it be a good deal to drop 2000 on a new tranny with 0 miles and clutch??

But lets say it's not 'broken'..

It seems logical to me that reshreshing/rebuilding one before it's actually broken so to speak is good practice.

Kinda like replacing all the gaskets, seals, etc on an engine with 200+k even though it's not necessarily 'broken'.

can u gimme more info on that Ian? I am lookin for a tranny right now. I was hoping to find someone locally, but i'd rather get something that comes with warranty and stuff.

I pushed 10k miles on my tranny (currently 150k miles) with bad differential bearings.

thats a great deal..

however what clutch is it?

if its the nissan key value clutch then kill that idea.. that thing will be dead in no time. I would check out the GD forum on the Exeddy(sp) clutches.. get one of those and go for that.

$350 is way cheap for an install. I am guessing its the dealership because thats the list price for a new tranny. You know whats also funny? the LSD Tranny is the same exact price from the dealership. All you would have to do is buy a LSD Drivers side axle from raxles.com or from nappa. Don't buy it from the dealership, and then boom, you have LSD.

Hmmm... well would i need to mention that i wanted the clutch kit from japan and NOT key value?? I saw those exedy's for 225 in the GD. And the LSD tranny is the same exact price from the dealer? If all it took is the axle... i think ill just do that. Would you happen to know the part number for the LSD tranny?
Thanks!

yeah when you call the dealership and ask for a clutch, they will say $197. I had to call them back and ask them if it was the key value and they said yes. It was weird, I had to call several other dealerships because the others claimed they didn't have OEM ones. When I did call another dealership, they said they had 2 of em... key value and the OEM. The OEM one was $230. If they tell you the price of the clutch is around 200, then u know it's key value.

I thought you could only get the LSD from Canada, but if i can get one here, ill do that. The clutch was around 200 and 180 after they took 20 off. Whats the difference between OEM and Exedy if any? And yeah if you can get the part number for me id appreciate it. Thanks Sprint (and everyone else)

make sure it isn't the key-value because that's exactly how much they quoted me w/ the 20% off discount they had on the key-value.

as long as the part numbers are in their database they can have it delievered. Exedy seems to be the clutch of choice now. I would tell you ACT, but then everyone who's tranny blew when they had it would tell you no, so i am thinking of the next best thing. Nissan OEM clutch from Japan would be a good choice too.

The switching out instrument clusters idea won't work now. I just read the fine print on my warrantee and it says, "Manual transmissions will not be warranted if failure is due to lack of lubrication or broken gears." I'm almost positive I have a broken gear. Sounds like their real proud of their work. Btw - it was a local company here in Wichita that did the rebuild. Chance & Sons.

as far as I'm concerned the ACT clutch was what made my trans go ALL THREE TIMES in less than a year and a half.

I had the car for almost TWO YEARS on the stock clutch...drove it hard as hell, and drove nearly 50,000 miles...then 3 months after the ACT switch...uh oh...there goes 3rd gear. 6 months after that.....2nd gear...and then finally 5 months after that...3rd gear again.

Um...yea...I think it was the ACT....

plus I ran a poll a while back and NO ONE said that they had ever broken a gear with a stock clutch (all the broken ones were aftermarket clutches) and now we have two people who claim to have blown the trans on a stock clutch...and one of them claims they blew 4th!!! (that's unheard of) what???

I see a trend...maybe some people fail to acknowledge it...but there is a definite trend.

What trend, the RS5F50A is a weak POS?

By the way, I wasn't even racing the car when I killed 4th. And not only was it an OEM clutch, it was FAR weaker than the one the car came with originally.

Take your old cluster out and take the gauge face off for the speedometer. Then simply roll back the miles. It will take a while but you can do it. Oh and i didnt tell you how to do that.

He doesn't abuse his transmissions by speed shifting. He has specifically stated that. These gearboxes can hold alot of constant torque. But they don't fare to well with shock.
