I will be buying a used 2000 maxima gxe today with 22k miles. What I'd like to know is there any suggested modifications I can make to the care for better performance and longevity. I'm not talking about beefing it up I would just like to make sure I have the best components for a long lasting good running car. I know the dealers don't put the best parts in new cars because it's not cost effective. What should I look at replacing?

If you're not interested in "beefing it up", the stock VQ is a tough engine. Regular maintenance will go a loooong way into making that engine last and last.
And hey, its still one of the 10 best engines in the world

I have a 4th gen (95-99) max 5 speed and I have only changed things when they wore out (until recently when I added a JWT intake). At 40,000 miles I changed my stock Yokahamas to Dunlops-Huge Difference in traction!. I also use synthetic motor oil since I live in a VERY COLD part of the country (today's high temp is going to be 10). My OEM brakes are still at 100K. I'd recommend you buy an aftermarket intake or do the K&N panel filterharger intake since our air filters cost $10-15 a pop and after a few changes you could have had a nice intake... Good luck and enjoy-these guys here are omnipitent regarding the Max.

5 speed or auto? The car is fairly new, so I would just do some maintanence items first. I would start using synthetic engine oil. Make sure you use the same weight 5W30. Change it every 5K-7.5K miles. If it's an auto, I would flush the tranny ~$60. Flush the cooling system while you in the shop ~$45. I would flush my auto tranny and cooling system every 2 years. You can get the tranny and coolant flush from Valvoline Instant oil change. http://www.vioc.com/index_flash.asp
Flushing your tranny will save you a rebuild in the future.
