more 300zx brakes questions...

first of all, I'm am talking to this dude on ebay about the calipers he is selling and this is the email he sent me:

I am talking about the rotor gap .The 26 mm rotor would fit a caliper with a 30 mm rotor gap. The 30 mm rotor would fit a caliper with a 35 mm rotor gap. What I am calling the rotor gap would be the space that the rotor would fit into the caliper. I agree and appreciate all the information you provided, I am making sure we both understand what I have.
whats is he talking about???

second, if I get the drilled and slotted 300zx rotors, would those be able to be milled down the 3mm, or do I have to get plain OEM ones?

third, the instructions on maximadriver say you need calipers from 92-96 300zx. Are those the only ones that will work, or can I use any calipers as long as I get the appropriate rotors?

*edit*

which calipers are better to get steel or aluminum?

When he is talking about the rotor gap he is elaborating on the fact that there were 2 seperate width rotors offered for 300ZX's during the years, a 26mm and a 30mm. They are the same diameter, but the width is different. Only benefits the wider rotor gives you is better heat dissapation (sp?) assuming you have a caliper with a 35mm gap.

I'm not sure about the grinding down of drilled rotors. I assume it would be possible as long as all holes are complete and some aren't half shaved. . . But I could be wrong. I know drilled isn't recommended though as they have a tendancy to crack if not done correctly.

And getting Aluminum calipers are recommended as they are lighter than the others. I think they actually made these calipers out of three types of metals. I know aluminum is harder to find though, so I wish you luck in finding them.

I understand that, but in no place that I read about this, has there been mention of 35mm.

Thanks

i think oem skyline rotors were 32 or 35 mm

for our application you still have to mill down 3mm so they will fit.

the aluminum ones are lighter, but both iron and aluminum calipers do a good job.

one more question. when I get my used calipers in the "as is" condition, is there anything I need to do to make sure they work, or to recondition them before I put them on?

I dismantled mine. I checked the pistons and all the seals. The rubber was still very pliable and had no cracks. I just reassembled them and they are good to go.

I know the pistons are like 30$ a piece. Mine just had surface corrosion on them so I reused them.

Caliper rebuild kits for them are like 33$ I think. Has all the seals you need and the clips and such.

Read this page, and view all the pics (they have text written in them) and you will understand.

This is quoted from that page
The following is a comparison of some different Z32 300ZX brake calipers.

The "26mm Aluminum" calipers were used ONLY on 1990 non-turbos. They used a 280mm x 26mm rotor.

The "30mm Aluminum" calipers were used on 1990 Twin-turbos and ALL 1991-1992.5 300ZX's (both turbo and non-turbo alike). They used a 280mm x 30mm rotor.

The "30mm Iron" calipers were used on ALL 1992.5-1996 300ZX's (both turbo and non-turbo alike). They also used the 280mm x 30mm rotor.

Of course, the easiest way to tell aluminum from iron is to use a magnet, but I hope this helps some people trying to figure out what they've got/are getting if buying with just a picture for info.
Look at the pics too.

Yeah, I read it, and it mentions nothing about the 35mm. The thing that threw me off, is that he lists the 26, and 30 as 30 and 35 respectively. So I was about to get the 30 when I realised that his 30mm means 26.

My fault I forgot to include the URL

Here are the necessary pics:

Here's the 35mm gap for the 30mm rotors (iron)

35mm gap for 30mm rotor (aluminum)

and

here's the 30mm gap for the 26mm rotors (aluminum).

Sorry for not posting the URL correctly before.

yes, you will still be able to mill X-drilled/slotted rotors down by 3mm...I had this done on my brembos when I installed the 300zx brakes on my car
