I bought my budget Y-pipe a while ago and finally went to a few places the last few weeks to get installation quotes. The first guy said $140 without even looking under the car. The second guy looked at it and said he could do it for $100 but it would mess up the computor and possibly hurt the engine. Today I took it to the local minakee and the guy said that to o2 sensor wouldnt fit because the OEM equipment goes north south and the hole for the plug goes east west. He also said the hanger should go east west. I called budget on my cell and had the guy talk to the installer. I dunno what to do, I just want to get this in without spending too much or hurting thr car. Any help would be appreciated.

By the way my car is Cali-spec.

 

what did the budget people tell you?

 

do you have a cali spec? if not, there should be no problem with the install. unless budget has changed their design, there are no hangers that i remember, and the O2's are in the exact same places. i'd get under there and take a look for yourself. those guys just may not know what they are talking about.

 

yeah I have cali spec. I looked under the car and sort of saw what the mienakee guy was saying, but thought it might be different once the stock one is down. Do you need to do anything special with the engine computor when installing a Y-pipe?

The Cali Spec Y pipe is completely different then a Fed spec. One of the o2 sensors gets moved to a completely new location. The wires will have to be rerouted to allow for it. It shouldn't be a big deal, it sounds like the shop really didn't want to take the extra time to do the job.

 

You sure went to a lot of people that don't know much about Maximas. No, it wont mess up your computer. No, you dont need to reset the ECU after installation. The O2 sensors will fit fine. There's plenty of room down there and plenty of slack in the wires. Just find a friend with some tools and dedicate a Saturday morning to installing it yourself.

Hey i am in NYC...I have been thinking about getting a buget Y pipe in my 97 max. Give me the contact info for max tunning in NY. Will they get the part too or do i have to take it to them?

 

From reading others posts...it seems easy to install. Just get the guy to loosen the rusted out nuts for you and jack the car up and try it out.

C'mon, buddy, you can do it! Everything I know about cars I've read, on here or in books, and I put a budget Y in my Cali-spec SE-L without any problems.

Go to a muffler shop and pay them like $20 to loosen the cat bolts and hand-tighten them. Then grab a friend, jack that puppy up, and go to town. It's a really easy job:

1. Unscrew o2 sensors.
2. Unbolt and remove old pipe.
3. Bolt in new pipe
4. Hook up o2 sensors.
5. Drive around!

If you run into trouble there are 20,000+ members on this site who can offer some assistance.

 

 

it's very easy to do, i think there's only 2 o2 sensors and 6 bolts to loosen, replace with new ones and then tighten.

btw what is budget's website and what is the model for the cali spec 99 y-pipe, i have a 99 Se cali spec (not limited, but also every option!) and a CAI and y will be my summer mods.

...and while you're at it, order their CAI...

The messed up part is if you took an Accord or F-Body into those shops, they'd be all over it.

What the heck is it with mechanics not knowing jack about one of the most popular 4 Door Japanese Sedans on the market?

(not that a F-Body is a sedan, but you get my point)

 

wow that's a good deal. i paid almost as much for the install as i did for the pipe. damn rusty cat bolts. a few places wouldn't even do it cuz they said they wouldn't mess with the cars emissions system.

 

since you're in mass (danSE), you might as well find an excuse to make a trip to Toronto. The shop is on the way to Toronto, and I'm sure the people at Budget would know how to install the thing. I was just there a few days ago to get my y pipe installed...the shop is pretty cool...no rules about the customer having to wait in an enclosed area with no windows. you can walk around and do whatever you want.

 

Its a guju thing when you live an hour away but would rather go to that shop cus they only charge 20 bux.... but since i live in NY this guju will just install it by himself

its not that hard, took my friend 30mins....you should have 2 people though, its easier that way.....

Bring it to lou's custom exhaust. They have 6 or 7 locations in Ma. I work part time at the Boston location; Mon-Wed 4pm-8pm and sat all day.

 

after a full day fo trying to get the old y-pipe off i gave up and rebolted everything back

any one in the southern NH area that knows any one that will install it for cheap so i wont have to struggle with it any more?

Of if i get brave enough again.....

if i cut the rusty bolts off of the cat what size bolts do i need to replace them.. i normaly would just try to match up the old ones but they are so badly rusted...

 

Cool, maybe I'll take it there today or wed (my days off). Where exactly is the Boston location? How much do you think you guys would charge?
