I broke my Koni shock... :(

I was retorquing the top piston nut and suddenly the torque wrench goes loose, and oil starts to well in the upper strut plate. I thought I was going to cry.

To make things worse, this was a motivational modified strut so I can't even go back to Koni to get a replacement...and to make things even sweeter, money is always on short supply.

Anybody else had this problem before? If so, was it with a standard Koni or a modified Motivational Koni?

Anyways, I get to have fun driving on this thing for a little while...always wanted to ride on blown struts.

what is a motivational modified strut? Are you talking about the strut insert that you put into a stock strut housing?

I am wondering if the failure had anything to do with motivational's part. You should talk to them about the problem and see if they have any suggestions.

call Koni and talk to gordon benson and see what he says the shock comes with lifetime warranty, unless you broke the top section of the rod. I hope you did not do that. Using a torque wrench on that small 14MM is not even a good idea or even the front strut not a good idea. I do how ever use silicone or sometype of glue to lock the nut in place.

I really don't know what part of the rod is broken. It was the upper strut nut (19mm) that I was re-torquing.

About what you said about the torquing the upper nut with Konis; are you not supposed to torque that to spec? If not, then just hand tighten?

Anyways, it looks like I'm gonna get the shaft on this one. I'm pretty sure the Motivation mods did not involve that section of the piston. Mike at Motivational denies this as a warranty item. I'm pretty sure that Koni will do the same since the strut insert was modified.

You do tighten it, but not that hard or you will strip it. Basically hand tighten will do.
