Hey guys, I recently cleaned my throttle body. It was pretty dirty. Lots of black smoke came out. I accidently stalled the car, whoops.

Anyway, after all that, I threw four codes.

Automatic Transmission Control Unit Signal to ECU
Mass Air Flow Sensor
Knock Sensor
Intake Air Temp Sensor

I figured the last 3 were because I disconnected the air filter, etc to get to the throttle body. Though the AT Control Unit Signal to ECU code got tripped as well? Anyone know why??? And get this, I drove the car with those 4 codes tripped, and it drove like a dream! Really good acceleration, really smooth perfect shifting. Though, I reset the computer, and now it drives like it used to. A slighty hard shift from 1st to 2nd. Did the tranny go into some sort of failsafe mode? The acceleration doesn't seem as good.

I've read I should check the dropping resistor, as well as the throttle position sensor for the tranny shifting issue. Maybe that should help that issue, but I'm wondering what the heck happened. Anyone have a clue?

Did you disconnect the battery before unpluging the sensors?

No actually I didn't. Guess I should have huh? Wish it were still in that state, it was fun to drive for that 30 minutes (until i reset the ECU).

Just cleaned my tb yesterday (97 gxe 5sp). Dirty, but now it's clean. Didn't notice any black smoke. No codes (started car 2x, waited till warmed up before shutting off). Haven't driven it out yet. Idle seems slightly smoother, barely noticable.

When I did mine I forgot to hook everything back up. It did not sound pretty when I tried to start it.

Peace - CHad

What did you do, clean the throttle body while the engine was running???or black smoke after you fired it up after cleaning????

I cleaned the throttle body and it made a big difference, runs alot smoother at idle and also from 1k to 3500 rpm,,car is a 96 with 124 km miles,,the tb was filthy.

I used the Pennzoil Gumout Throttle Body Cleaner. I first used a rag to clean out the areas where I could with my finger. Then I followed the can's instructions. Spray for 10 seconds in throttle body while engine is running, then wait 10 seconds ( I actually waited about a minute, the engine was choking pretty bad). I did that about 6 times (used 3/4 can). I actually had to race the engine somewhat (about 2K) to keep it running. The black smoke came out after about 2-3 pulses. On the 6th or 7th pulse it came out white, and that's when I stopped (turned engine off).

After that, I hooked everything back up. I started engine without trouble, and noticed the check engine light came on. I ran the self-test and noted the 4 codes. I took it for a spin, and this is when it drove really good (really smooth shifts, and it felt alot more powerful). Throttle body cleaning only fixes idling and minor engine hesitation, but in this case I believe I tripped some sensors or something (since I stalled the damn thing when I was spraying the cleaner).

So question is...should I attempt to disable those sensors to feel the same power and shift smoothness? I think the stock ECU chokes the engine for emissions or something. Anyone know if running the tranny or engine in "safe mode" is actually safe? Or better yet, why in the world with those 4 codes tripped, did my car drive so damn good? Since I've reset my computer, it's the same old power and tranny smoothness (not that smooth) as usual. Anyone with experience on this?

This weekend, I'm going to tinker with it, like disconnecting the MAF sensor (I'm not even sure what its for), and seeing if the same smoothness occurs. I have to try something.

The throttle body gives air into your intake. You need gas and air to make good combustion.

The picture I referenced is the part that gets hel*a dirty after awhile. I cleaned my throttle body, because I was having slight idling problems. That little butterfly plate can get gummed up, and have trouble moving very finely. Alot of other things with your intake can get gummed up.

The part i cleaned and sprayed into was:

Don't really know howto use the forums for full-effect yet...so copy and paste if you have to.

I dont know if it was a good idea to have the engine running when you cleaned the throttle body???? I think ask frank at motorvate.ca, he is good with that stuff.

if your going to spray it into the engine its better while its running... if your just cleaning the plate I dont really think it matters.
