Well, my new job that I started earlier this month is awesome. I'm gonna be a Claims Rep for GEICO. I'm in training right now and it's really interesting learning all about insurance and how everything works.

Got to hear some funny claims too.

Just thought I'd let you know... if you have GEICO insurance in the NE you might be talking to me if you have a claim!! God Forbid!!

I started my career as a claim attorney with State Farm. Lots of beaurocracy involved. You'll have fun-is it your first job? Study those state unfair claims practices acts to avoid bad faith claims and you'll be a claims manager in no time. Good luck.

Geico!

Good luck to you. You joined a good, solid, company. A.M. Best rates them very high and they are known to be very friendly in the 'industry.'

I think that you will learn a lot from their program as well. IT has been said that they program they put you in makes you worth $7000 more to the market when you are done. Heck....if you become unhappy you can 'sell yourself' to another company for more money based on your training!

Best of luck to you....hey all insurance guys aren't idiots

kratz: I'm 19 and still going to school so it's part time for now but it's my first "corporate" job. I worked in retail and for Newsday (a ny newspaper) before this.

Jim: as far as I know they do, I'll ask tommorow (i'll be dealing mostly with ny/connecticut

shumax: thanks! seems like a really good, solid company. like i said, right now it's just part time while i go to school but i guess you never know right? the good thing is there's a huge opportunity for advancement within the co. the training process is really long though!!

I'm pretty sure that GEICO doesn't insure in NJ and Mass. They laughed when I asked them for a quote for a 20 yr old with a 1 yr old car at the time. I have a perfect driving record and they told me it would be over 3,000. They were not too helpful.

I think IT is still where it's at

I did the B-school route and was going to go into finance but did a 180 into IT. I still think it's where it's at though not as hot as it was 2 years ago. Still, 10-15 headhunters call per day, which is a break from the endless 50 or more 2 years ago. It's not just about money but job security, so I'd recommend technology as a career. Starting pay is about 46-47 with a 4-year degree which is about even with engineering. I think that's a decent salary for someone 22 years-old. Imagine what they can make at age 30?

frank: I'm actually majoring in Computer science in school right now (finishing up 2nd year). Anyway, what route do you suggest I go? Right now I'm doing the programming thing but what should I start doing to prepare for when I get out of school? Certifications? which ones? What aspect of computer science would you recommend I start heading towards?

Thanks
Chris

I know that lots of the certifications these days are no longer that great--the MCSE is the first one that comes to mind. Too many people went to those institutes and got them, but can't solve any real problems. I like the CCNP certification myself, and I still think networking is a growth area, but perhaps other people can make other recommendations. I heard that Oracle dba is a good area to be in. Experience is what it's all about. If you get into Geico, scope out their technology. Then solve their problems, you'll be golden.
